Your Goal Over the Long Thanksgiving Weekend

Over the long weekend, it is vital that you make as much progress on your Unit 3 Assignment as possible.

In particular, I would recommend trying to finish the ā€œPart I: Writing in a New Genreā€ portion of your assignment to leave you ample time to finish your Artistā€™s Statement.

Remember that your entire Unit 3 Assignment, both Parts I and II, are due on December 4th.

Please feel free to reach out to me over the weekend, if you have any questions. When we meet again on Monday, November 27th, we will be back in the computer lab.

Thirteenth Post of the Semester (Describing Your Mentor Text and Committing to a Plan for Unit 3)

This post requires you to do several shorter tasks.

First, I would like you to go to the Unit 3 Assignment page on this website and review the student examples that have been posted.

Next, you will address two prompts. Both are geared toward getting you started on your Unit 3 Assignment.

First, reflect on the Mentor Text Analysis activity that we completed in class. Review the notes that you made about your mentor text. In a paragraph of at least 100 words, describe your findings from your Mentor Text Analysis. In particular, write about the aspects of your mentor text that you would like to emulate in your own work.

Second, in another paragraph of at least 100 words, describe your concrete plan for your Unit 3 assignment. What genre will your DEFINITELY be working in? What is your EXACT purpose? What SPECIFIC audience are you trying to reach? How will you give EXPLICIT credit to outside resources? Also describe some of the more practical elements of the text you will put together. For example, how will you organize your ideas? What kinds of visuals, if any, do you plan to incorporate? What about audio? What software, if any, do you plan to use? What other resources do you plan to access?

For Wednesday, 11/15

You have no post assignment due for Wednesday! However, I expect you to do several things to prepare for class:

  1. Review the Unit 3 Assignment page. In particular, take a look at some of the resources I collected to aid you in completing this project and think about what other resources you might need.
  2. If you have not already done so, select which genre you are going to work in for yourĀ  Unit 3 Assignment. Think critically about WHY you have selected this particular genre. In other words, how does your selected genre cater to the needs and expectations of your intended audience?

In class on Wednesday, each of you will spend some time searching the internet for a “mentor text”–something you can model your own project off of. If you would rather not use your phone to search the internet, be sure to bring a laptop or tablet.

Be prepared to speak with me on Wednesday about your plans for the Unit 3 Assignment.
