De Blasio Setting Up a Test: Prison Reformer vs. Rikers Island

Joseph Ponte, New York’s newly appointed correction commissioner has been informed of the horrors at jails such as Rikers Island, and went in to see it for himself. Mr. Ponte was hired because he has reformed many prisons, which they say is easier because the inmates do not change as often as in Jails such as Rikers which last year had 81,758 admissions. Since the City’s Board of Corrections has been reporting abuses more than ever, the Mayor feels it is very Important to initiate reform.

The reason I chose this article is because it becomes apparent that Mr. Ponte will not only have to reform the prisoners at Rikers but the guards also. The President of the New York Officer Corrections Union, Mr. Seabrook has openly called hiring Mr. Ponte “a bad move” because they believe his reform policies are “hug a thug.”

During class we have spoken of the criminal mind and how rehabilitation has failed the inmate, but what do you think is going on with these officers and the head of the Union, when they denounce the very upheaval which may change the way inmates behave in and eventually out of jail. Do you feel that if given a chance this reform may reduce recidivism? Do you feel that the guards and Union President may require Cognitive re-calibration?

  1. I believe that if given the chance anyone can change. As human service workers we believe people can change but it takes time and a lot of empowering, support and education. There is no harm in trying to reform the prisoners and guards and in the long run there is really nothing to loose by trying. To denounce this action, just shows how much hope the Union does not have in the inmates and again if someone isn’t willing to believe in them why would they and why wouldn’t they keep committing crimes?

    • JBautista I agree with you fully, especially when you spoke if the lack of hope they have in the inmates. Sometimes it appears in order to completely reform a system, they may have to remove those whom in office are not willing to support the change.
