Federal Hall Structure

Objectives

• Understand the role of each component in a basic structural system
• Learn how to size structural components using basic rules of thumb and calculations from the book
• Apply these concepts to Federal Hall and design a structural system

Activities

• Group B – Reading #8 presentation
  • Reading #8 recap
• Understanding structural framing – reading framing plans
  • In class framing demonstration
• In class activity:
  • The class will be divided into groups (same as reading groups) and sent to breakout rooms. Each group shall design a framing plan for one of their CMU buildings (from Class 9 activity) listed below:
    • Group A – Mia’s building
    • Group B – Vanessa’s building
    • Group C – Zijie’s building
    • Group D – Danny’s building
  • All framing members will bear on the CMU walls (interior and exterior), and no interior columns shall be added unless absolutely necessary
  • Groups should use the smallest members possible when designing their framing system
  • Only the structural components below shall be used:
    • Decking – 5′-0″ max span
    • 12″ Beam – 15′-0″ max span
    • 8″ Beam – 12′-0″ max span
    • 6″ Beam – 8′-0″ max span
  • Label all members in the framing plan, and indicate which direction the decking is spanning
