Ellen Lupton, reminds me of our dear Professor Beth!
Anywho, her explanation for grids, hierarchy, and type size is very simple but precise.
For grids, I like how she explains the wide variety of grids and how they can be placed. However, she also clarifies that you should crowd your grids and leave room to breathe since grids are supposed to make structure on a spread.
For hierarchy, similar to the grids, she explains that having variety in your type is important. First you should type out what you would like to use and then adjust as you go. You can change weight, scale, positions, and colors to form a structure for your text.
For type size, she explains the having a small, large, and medium size help you build a simple foundation. The headlines should be the largest type, but doesn’t have to be on the top of your text. Medium could be a subheading and small is your general text. You can put this in any order as long as it’s neat and legible.
I’m pleased to read that Ellen Lupton’s explanations are simple and precise—and hungry-making.
Gosh. Ellen Lupton is amazing overall; I’m honored to be considered in the same sprinkly vein.
