Last day at BHS

Our last visit to the Brooklyn Historical Society was truely bitter sweet. I’ve enjoyed our visits there from our walking tour, to learning about maps and analzying documents. My group members and I got to view the trains tickets that were really cheap it would seem now but really interesting because we were familair with one of the train the ticket was being used for which is the Long Island Railroad (LIRR). We also reviewed a document bout advertising where the newpaper was trying to get advertisements in their paper about all the new tunnels and bridges. So at our first table where we viewed our first set of documents it was really about the new means of transportation in the 1900s and celebrating change and new ways of travel, whereas at our second table filled with documents it was a bit different; still envoloving what seems to be very low amounts of money for what was being given we viewed a proposal for land being sold and the response to this agreemnet between two me being made. One thing that found so amazing when I was viewing these documents was not the actual agreement but I was obsessed with the paper it was written on. I had never seen a watermark before so to hold the paper up in the light completely by accident and disscover that; it really was just the highlight of my trip. I’ve enjoyed experiencing BHS and might go there on my own one day to do some research of my own.

  1. The question about the relative cost of the transportation tickets is a very interesting one. On the one hand, it offers us a sense of the changing value of the dollar. On the other hand, it offers us a chance to think about the changing values of different items or services. Was a train ticket as much of a person’s spending money as one ride on the subway is now? Who could afford to travel this way? Was it a daily thing, occasional, etc? You and your groupmates might consult this source for more information about converting dollars from a previous era into contemporary dollars.

  2. Well our last visit in B.H.S was very nice from the walking tour to the documents. In the second table me and my group got to look at 2 look at a map which was showing different houses. It was about a tour to peoples house which was done once a year and you had to pay 5 dollars each just to go on it. What we noticed about looking at the map was every house they had something unique inside it seemed like you were visiting a museum. They also had candles thing which use to be used years ago but they wanted to keep that memory with them of how they use to live before. After that we got to look at two letter and tell what they are saying. We actually found out that they were related to each other. I had a good time in our last visit to B.H.S and i think i might go there again by myself and do some research.
