Essay 6: Students and Faculty in the Archives (SAFA)

Throughout the semester, we have used materials from the Brooklyn Historical Society’s archives, locations from the walking tour, ideas from readings about Brooklyn and its history, as the basis for our writing and discussions because our course is part of the Students and Faculty in the Archives (SAFA) project. For Essay 6, you will submit either two blog posts (300 words each) or one longer essay (600 words) related to the SAFA work we have done this semester. These can be revisions of previous work. In addition, you will write a 250-300 word reflection on the experience of working with the Brooklyn Historical Society or on the topics we have covered in class. Finally, you will identify, define, and provide in context two vocabulary words for our vocabulary list. All materials will be showcased on our course blog and on our SAFA site, http://safa.brooklynhistory.org/rosen-f11/. Your work will be visible to anyone who browses to either site, and will be displayed for SAFA presentations. This means that you will want your work to be as perfect as possible! A greater emphasis will be placed on correctness for this assignment, especially since you are revising previous work.

To recap, you will:

  • identify two blog posts or one longer piece that you would like to revise for this project: 11/30
  • revise the piece or pieces you have identified (600 words total): 12/5
  • write a reflection (250-300 words) on the experience of working with materials or ideas from BHS, or on the topics we have covered in class: 12/5
  • identify two vocabulary words related to our work with BHS, define each, and provide an example of how each is used: 12/5
  • post your work on the OpenLab site: 12/7

    Reflection on Experience
This semester I have to say it has gone by great. I have learned a lot on Brooklyn’s past and what it represents in Americas history. The way classes started with going on a walking tour to BHS showed me a lot. This walking tour was a great experience because of me being new to Brooklyn and it being my first time in Brooklyn. Learning about the past of what went on in Brooklyn showed me how Brooklyn was looked at by historians. BHS staff has done a great job in talking about places that bring out the history of Brooklyn. The assignments we have had to do on Brooklyn have helped many of us into learning and in coming more in touch with the new environment that Brooklyn is for new people into Brooklyn. I have enjoyed looking at documents and working together in groups. There have been many essays we have had to write and also things we have had to investigate. But I have to say that the essay I have enjoyed the most in doing was essay number five because of how hard I worked on it and how I liked writing about the first place I went to when I first came to City Tech. Writing about the Brooklyn Bridge and doing research on it got me proud of myself. I personally believe that essay five has been one of my best Essays written. This semester has been great in getting everyone into becoming friends and teaching us about Brooklyn. I hope in getting to learn even more on Brooklyn.
