Personally I’m not a big fan about reading books i really enjoy writing rather than reading. Although if i were to read a book i’d prefer mystery books, I love it because i could picture myself in the characters shoes and imagine everything i’m reading in my head. I do tend to struggle focusing on a book because i get easily distracted to me a book that is boring or not to my interest is just a book filled with words i try to reread it and make notes on the side with a sticky note and pick out the lines that stand out to me and like that i sorta get the idea of what the author is trying to say. In writing is much easier i love to jot down my opinion on a text and go into detailed about what i’m asked to write about although i struggle a bit because i start writing and writing and about a certain part of a question and totally forget that i have other parts to answer too. I could honestly say that i could read a book for 45 minutes straight without looking at my phone or getting distracted. When i read a book and if it’s a reading i need to do for a class i focus on getting my reading done and than i focus on other things after i know all the work needed to be done is done.
I remember in my past english classes my teachers will tell me when i read a text or wrote an essay to always focus on the questions being asked or use pick out the words or phrases of a text that i felt important and analyze it, i found this very useful because it help me better understand and form my writing better. A line that capture my attention in the reading “read like a writer” was ” I realized writing is a word- by-word, sentence- by- sentence process” i found this important because a writer starts with a plot what is this book or text going to be about they jot down events of what they want a book to be about so usually when we start a writing in some cases we make an outline of events happening that are leading us to the point of a writing and answering a question i feel this line is very outstanding and true. Bunn begins his article with his time in college and how he struggle to focus on reading and how he worked i feel he started this page 71 like this because it’s something that drives the reader’s attention he begins with a struggle and ends in a solution that helped him become better at what he did.
What i think Morrison means when she says “Reading as a skill vs “reading as an art is that reading as a skill you read just as a book is written you don’t tend to focus on more and beyond then only the words written down. Now in reading as an art is more using your imagination, writing down, and picturing what the author is saying in your head it a better understanding trying to live the scene rather then just reading of a bunch of pages. Morrison’s description of reading as an art changes the meaning of the activity of reading in that she says reading as a skill is only half of what your mind understands about the text the other half you make up yourself you have to picture the text to better understand what is going on or what is about to happen or the feels of the characters. Morrison says ” I can read it again and again, step into its world confident that my attentiveness will always yield wonder” this helped me put my ideas together because as i was reading i’d jot down lines that stood out to me and picture this specific scene in my head in my version trying to get a meaning of something that i wanted to make sense off.
Joselin,
Somehow I missed this post earlier– sorry about that!
Great details in here. I like your comments about how you strategize with sticky notes. I also think it’s important that you recognize the fact that you get distracted– this way you can implement strategies (such as the sticky notes) to help yourself. Also, it’s clear that you read both the Morrison and Bunn articles closely. The quotes that you picked out are really important to their overall message.
