Taught me my alphabet to say-

With drowsy head and folded wing,

Far down within some shadowy lake,

To me a painted paroquet

To lisp my very earliest word

While in the wild wood I did lie,

A child- with a most knowing eye.

Of late, eternal Condor years

So shake the very Heaven on high

With tumult as they thunder by,

I have no time for idle cares
Romance, who loves to nod and sing,
Through gazing on the unquiet sky.

And when an hour with calmer wings

Its down upon my spirit flings-

That little time with lyre and rhyme

To while away- forbidden things!

My heart would feel to be a crime

Unless it trembled with the strings.

Poe\’s stepfather, John Allan, didn\’t want Poe to become a poet. Thus, Poe had little time to dedicate to his poetry. This is one of Poe\’s few poems that, in fact, is NOT about losing someone you love, or even a particular person. The second paragraph is saying that even though Poe has \”no time for idle cares\”, the metaphorical bird of romance sheds soft feathers on his spirit (\”And when an hour with calmer wings/Its down upon my spirit flings\”), and he takes a bit of time out of his day to write poetry, even though he\’s not supposed to (\”That little time with lyre and rhyme/To while away-forbidden things!\”), because to Poe, poetry IS romance.he is saying that love is a bird, that stayed with him trough his childhood, and he could love as a child, but now that he is an adult, he cannot love anymore, and the bird has flown away.In my opinion and interpretation, this poem has context dealing with romance, pain, and darkness. The start seems to be more a happy romance and love and how it makes you feel. Then, it turns darker and reflects more of loosing the one you loved first. There are so many ways to take this poem, but I do believe it does indeed involve romance, just not the kind everyone assumes it to be. We must remember that Poe wasn\’t your average man and does in fact have a different spin on everything, including what love and romance are. well i think that hes trying to explain hes not talking about the romance we usually talk about…even though its …hard to find love in this world and instead of looking for love you could be taking your time to do other things..and becuase of that he lost his love in the ned..i think edgar is a more complicated dude and hes trying to explain how true romance is hard to find
in the first stansa he is saying that the paroquet is hes first real love n she taught him his alphabet which mean she taught him the first things in love but he took advantage and lied to her and lost his first love
on the second stansa hes saying how wen your older true romance is hard to find because your stuck in a world of lies and your always in a rush afraid to fall back in the romance you had as a child
