Feminist Manifesto

Mina Loy’s feminist manifesto was in my eyes brilliant, I love the way she describes how woman are brain washed into having self esteems , the double standard in society. A woman’s sexuality is made to depict her, if a woman sleeps around she is labeled a hore, or considered a bad woman, Woman have the right to look for love in as many places until finding the right one if she chooses. Her approach was definitely very strong and to the point, I agreed with a lot of her statements. One of the statements “leave off looking to men to find out what you are not– seek within yourselves to find out what you are”.. this is something that I can relate to our reading intimate apparel, woman who weight their value by  the men in their lives. like Esther she had so much talent and potential but her lust for love lead her to pain suffering and hurt,

Intamite Apparel

Esther is a woman with big dreams, she only hopes to become  a successful woman in life in general , in her eyes success is measured through class in society and also love. Many woman feel the need of love. Married to a perfect Stanger shows that Esther was desperate for love,  Her husband was a total different person than she imaged him to be. Esther was very naïve and foolish to believe a person can be trusted through letters.

The woman did not realize that love is not what completes them they had a lot more to offer themselves then a man. Love is an emotion which we all must feel but many woman let a man and love destroy their dreams and kill their passion for other things. intimate apparel was a great example of that.

Their new beginning is  a happy ending in my eyes because sometimes you must learn to fail in order to win, and just maybe the woman would never make the same mistakes, being taking advantage of and used in the name of “love” ,

Reading A Script: Intimate Apparel

I enjoyed reading “Intimate Apparel” by Lynn Nottage. It was definitely different from reading a story with a narrator. Usually, a novel has a narrator or character telling a story what is going on in the story, as well as how certain characters are feeling. With reading a play, I can visualize what is going on as if I’m actually there. I’m no longer a reader, but I’m a spectator of the events taking place. I am reading the events as they are happening, but allows me to know everything that’s going on because I am present for all the conversations and significant situations that take place between different characters. Usually novels would have a omnipresent narrator or someone who knows more then majority of the characters. In reading this play, the roles are switched where I, being the reader, may know more than the characters. This gives me the position of being omnipresent. I am able to know things that aren’t the emotions of the characters that aren’t spelled out, but can be conveyed by what they say and the actions that the stage directions give the characters.

The way the play is written affects my way of reading because I have to read it line by line instead of sentence by sentence. Reading doesn’t flow as well as it does if I were reading a story. There are also a lot of stops in the script for giving stage directions to the characters, telling the person who were to be the character what to physically to display an emotion. This was something that I had to get used to because I had to tell myself that the direction weren’t something the character said, but did. It’s like I had to take a break in reading to read a side note about the characters action.

My name is Evelin Hernandez I am currently attending City College of Technology, in pursuit of a career in nursing. It has been an interesting journey. I am a single mother raising a nine year old girl. My daughters name is Jaylene Clevah Reaves. I have taken the responsibility to raise my deceased sisters two daughters. My life has been a rollercoaster due to the death of my older sister and other bumps I have faced along the road which we know as life. I decided to take this course because I admire successful woman and  I intend to write my own personal autobiography. I look forward to sharing my experiences with other woman.. I hope I can help other woman who may be going through some of the same issues I have endured.

I look forward to learning about the woman who have made history as well as shaped it. Woman have come a long way in society, we have gone from having limited rights to being able to express ourselves freely and in the open. Woman play a major role in the arts. Woman have been granted opportunity’s that were not always available. I appreciate the fact that I am living at a time were I myself can enjoy the privileges, that many others before me fought for me to have. I hope that we all learn to the best of our ability. I am happy to be your classmate I hope we can all learn from each other.

Introduction

My name is Tayyaba. This is my second year in City Tech. I was in the Dental Technician field but then I changed my major to liberal arts in science. Music helps me relieve my stress. I’m also a huge fan of makeup. I absolutely love collecting the limited edition sets. I love doing makeup on others too. Although becoming a cosmetologist isn’t what I want as a career. I have always wanted to become a dentist. They say smiling is contagious to I wanted to help others get the smile they always wanted. Hopefully in another 2 years I will get my bachelors. With that I plan on going to dental school.  I am also very competitive especially when it’s male vs female. This is one reason why I chose women writers. I wanted to explore the world of women writers. How the first female got her name out with her written piece. I would love to have discussions on how female portrays her feelings into her writings. Another thing I like to do is travel. I’m Pakistani so I always go to Pakistan, along with that I have been to Saudi Arabia, England, & Canada.  Overall I’m a jolly person.

Charlotte Perkins Gilman’s Opposing Stories

Charlotte Perkins Gilman wrote two short stories from the point of view of two women. One story is in a utopian world, “The Cottegette,” while the other is in a dystopian world, “The Yellow Wallpaper.” The short story, “The Cottegette,” showed a woman who loved a man and lived in a beautiful little secluded house. The story ended with them getting engaged because the man loved her for who she was, not because of her domestic skills. Everything in the story was happy with an ideal ending, that is why its utopian. On the other hand, “The Yellow Wallpaper” is very dystopian. The woman lives in misery and oppression because of her illness. The ended is very shocking as well, with the woman “turning into” the trapped woman on the wall. This is dystopian because the story was unfortunate and miserable.

In “The Yellow Wallpaper,” there are points in the beginning that give us a clue about our narrator’s state of mind. The narrator seems to be quite unreliable. An example of this is when she says,

If a physician of high standing, and one’s own husband, assures friends and relatives that there is really nothing the matter with one but temporary nervous depression–a slight hysterical tendency– what is one to do?

This passage shows that her mental stability is questionable. A doctor, who also knows her very well, is saying that she is mentally and emotionally unwell. Another example would be when she describes her feelings toward the wallpaper,

“I get positively angry with the impertinence of it and the everlastingness. Up and down and sideways they crawl, and those absurd, unblinking eyes are everywhere. There is one where two breadths didn’t match, and the eyes go all up and down the line, one a little higher than the other.”

In this passage, it is shown that paper on a wall makes her feel strong emotions. It is generally an oddity to be so emotional over something so trite. The second part shows that she is personifying this paper and believing in her personifications. It is not easy to believe or rely on someone who is mentally unwell.

The Cottage and The Yellow Wallpaper

In “The Yellow Wallpaper” by Charlotte Perkins Gilman, it is easy to tell by the story that the protagonist is a very unreliable narrator. I found several quotes in the story that can prove this.

1) “John is a physician, and PERHAPS–( I would not say it to a living soul, of course, but this is dead paper and a great relief to my mind)–PERHAPS that is one reason why I do not get well faster. You see he does not believe I am sick.”  This quote from the story makes me believe that she is making herself sick because her husband say that she is fine, but she says that he does not believe that she is sick. I think this may be a mental thing.

2) “If a physician of high standing, and ones own husband, assures friends and relatives that there is really nothing the matter with one but temporarily nervous depression-a slight hysterical tendency-what is one to do” This quote from the story makes me feel as though shes trying to convince the reader that even though the husband says she is not sick, there is plenty wrong with her so she must be.

3)”I sometimes fancy that in my condition if I had less opposition and more society and stimulus -but John says the very worst thing I can do is to think about my condition , and I confess it always makes me feel bad.” This quote makes me believe that she lies about things because if John thinks shes fine then he would not to to her about her condition. I also believe that she is trying to make the audience pity her.

These quotes prove that she is an unreliable narrator because she seems very dishonest.

The narrators relationship with John seems very complicated. I found a few quotes to prove this.

1) “I get unreasonably angry with John sometimes. I’m sure I never use to be so sensitive. I think it is due to this nervous condition.” I think this is interesting because she says she gets overly angry at him, but covers it up by saying that it is probably just her condition.

2)”He is very careful and loving, and hardly lets me stir without special direction.” This is also very interesting because this proves that her husband takes care of her.

3)”John does not know how much I really suffer. He knows there is no REASON to suffer that satisfies him.” This quote makes me think that they don’t communicate as much because if they did, he would know that she believes that there are reasons to suffer.

These quotes prove how complicated they are. John seems like he cares about her and  doesn’t want her to keep believing that she is sick. The narrator depicts John as a caring man who may not fully understand what she is going through.

Gilmans story’s may be defined as a utopia and dystopia. A utopia is an ideal place or state and a dystopia is a society characterized by human misery, as squalor, oppression, disease and overcrowding. I think that “The Yellow Wallpaper would be the dystopia because it doesn’t seem like she is in an ideal state because she believes she is very ill, and seems very paranoid. Her relationship with her husband is also not ideal, The utopia would be “The Cottage” because the narrator would marry Mr. Ford.

The setting in “The Yellow Wallpaper” was basically at home, where she was stuck all the time. I think that’s why she hated the yellow wallpaper so much because she always had to look at it. In “The Cottage” the setting was mostly outdoors and the author made it seem like Malda really loved it.

In “The Cottage” I do believe that Malda was a reliable narrator because she was happy.

1)”I was delighted with it. More than delighted. Here this tiny shell of unpainted wood peeped out from under the trees, the only house in sight except the distant white specs on far off farms, and the little wandering village in the river-threaded valley. It sat right on the turf,-no road, no path even, and the dark woods shadowed the back windows.” This quote shows how happy Malda was with the cottage and the areas surrounding it.

2)”Never did I know real joy and peace of living, before that blessed summer at “High Court.” It was a mountain place, easy enough to get to, but strangely big and still and far away when you were there.” This also proves how happy Malda was to be living here.

This proves that she is a reliable narrator because she is happy, so there would be no reasons to lie.
