About First Year Learning Communities

As its mission, First Year Learning Communities (FYLC) at New York City College of Technology aims to grow and support communities among first-semester students, peer mentors, and participating faculty that foster excitement for learning, intellectual engagement, a sense of belonging, and connections across academic disciplines.

About FYLC partners

FYLCs are groupings of an academic course plus City Tech 101, a college readiness course, that include all the same students to foster community among students new to college. These courses use a shared reading to spark shared intellectual experiences across these courses. Peer mentors work with FYLCs in CT 101 to help guide students through this first semester as well.

About the FYLC Focus for 2024

All FYLCs this semester will have a focus based on students majors. Ours is Built Environment. This means that all students in our ENG 1101 and CT 101 classes are majoring in Architecture, Construction Management/Civil Engineering, and Facilities Management. The ENG 1101 course will take inspiration from this focus. CT 101 will also devote time to the Built Environment focus.
