The graphic memoir The Complete Persepolis by Marjane Satrapi and the film Persepolis by Satrapi and Vincent Paronnaud is about an Iranian girl who struggles with growing up in her country because of the Islamic revolution. She faces a lot of adversities that cause a lot of pain and changes to her life. I will be comparing the similarities and differences between the text and film version using Character and Setting terms. One of the exchange concepts that will be included will be Sacrifice. Color and non-diegetic/diegetic sounds will also be discussed.

Translation Essay Draft

The short story, New Boy by Roddy Doyle is a reading that talks about the hardships of the child protagonist: Joseph, and his experience of transitioning into a completely different school environment. Throughout the reading Joseph feels uncomfortable, different, and out of place with his classmates and starts to feel homesick. Throughout the short story, we sympathize for this poor child, and come to the conclusion as to why Joseph finds himself in this predicament. Due to how descriptive the reading is, we are able to paint a good mental image and garner feelings on how Joseph felt but luckily the 2007 film, New Boy, helped fill in the blanks and highlight certain stuff of importance that wasn’t as recognized in the reading. Despite there being a multitude of differences between the film and the reading, we are met with similar conclusions but yet we see certain characters in a different light based on how the film captures them.

  • Sacrifice: Joseph moving to a completely different school environment in order to continue his education, Josephs father sacrificing himself and complying with the police in order to keep his son safe.

Conclusion:

Wrap up the overall essay by reiterating my points made within my body paragraphs, talk about thesis statement and how important it is to recognize the differences that have been made within the reading and film of New Boy.

Translating Roddy Doyle, Steph Green’s New Boy (Introduction)

“New Boy,” by Roddy Doyle, takes place at a school in Ireland. The story unfolds from the eyes of a nine-year-old African boy named Joseph and how he is a new student in this Ireland school. Roddy Doyle’s story is changed from chapters to film as Steph Green was able to capture certain moments and enhance the storytelling through transitions and facial expressions which can’t be described on paper. “New Boy’s” concepts are revenge and forgiveness as you’ll notice throughout Joseph’s encounters with other students as well as his tragic past about his father.

 

Body Paragraph 1 (The Five-Part Reading Tool)

In this paragraph, I’ll elaborate on the Character and Setting of the story and I’ll decipher the differences between the film version and the short story. For example, I’ll describe certain scenes that contain the milk carton and bullying segments that help understand Joseph’s character and the people around him. 

 

Body Paragraph 2 (Exchange Concepts)

In this paragraph, I’ll elaborate on the two concepts that were used in the story. I believe revenge and forgiveness takes place out of the five concepts. You’ll witness how Joseph is the embodiment of these two concepts and how it’s portrayed in the film.

 

Body Paragraph 3 (Two Film Concepts)

I’ll talk about the Transitions and MacGuffin that occur throughout the film. I’ll be choosing two scenes that really spoke to me and how the story moves with these concepts.

 

Conclusion

I’ll give a brief summary on everything that I’ve talked about throughout the other body paragraphs about the narrative and film “New Boy” and how Steph Green was able to provide a seamless translation. To then finalize my essay with the concept of forgiveness.

Throughout, “The Complete Persepolis” by Marjane Satrapi and “Persepolis”, directed by Satrapi and Vincent Paronnaud, both demonstrate a traditional film style of Traditional Translation by keeping some of the traits that demonstrate the character development of Marjane throughout the graphic memoir and the animated film. Some key points I’ll be adding are the following:

Terms from Five-Part Reading Tool

  • For this section, I’ll be demonstrating CHARACTER because as a reader and viewer of both animated film and graphic memoirs, it is shown how Marjane develops over some time. The character’s Ethnicity and Race will also be added to mention the internal conflicts the has with herself. 
  • Another thing I’ll also be adding is the SETTING. The Setting in the film and graphic memoir demonstrates an important key role in the decisions and perspective the character has on it.

Film Concept 

  • One of them will be Color, to demonstrate the mood and meaning of both film and graphic memoirs.
  • Another one is a Transition, to show how it goes from her perspective in society to her dreams or visions and other stuff. (Mostly, in the film)

Exchange Concept 

  • One exchange concept is Sacrifice. Marjane sacrificed many things for her own needs to survive, but one of them is her identity. She decided to sacrifice her background identity to fit in with “society” outside Iran.  

Scenes 

  • For scenes, I’ll be choosing a maximum of three. These will vary from her age and perspective.

New Boy

“New Boy” (2007) a film written by Roddy Doyle, and directed by Steph Green, informs the audience about our protagonist, a young boy, hence the title “New Boy” called Joseph and the struggles he is having in his environment and how he has overcome some of these struggles. Roddy Doyle and Steph Green created a traditional translation, as some parts of the story were changed in the film. Throughout the short story we feel sympathy towards Joseph because we understand his thought process, however in the film the camera shots and other elements provide the audience with insight to how Joseph was feeling.

Body Paragraph

The film version is a traditional translation because the story of Joseph moving to a new school and being the new kid has not changed. Steph Green created a tradition change by removing some aspects from the text.

Body Paragraph 2

In the film we hear non-diegetic sounds when Joseph has a flashback to him hiding as his father gets taken away. Diegetic sounds when Joseph returns back to reality. The non-diegetic sounds were very eerie thus it can symbolize how Joseph is traumatized by his history. Explain some camera techniques that are used in the film to show more character development

  • First person 

Body Paragraph 3

Both film and text have exchange concepts that are similar to each other for example, Joseph forgives the bullies for attacking him. There is sacrifice as well when Joseph laughs now with his new friends he is reminded of how he got to go here in the first place.

Conclusion

Steph Green created a tradition change on the text “New Boy” written by Roddy Doyle. He maintained the main story of a young boy arriving at a new school and the struggles he had and overcame. Steph Green used film concepts, camera angles or techniques, and exchange concepts to provide readers/listeners his take on “New Boy”

Persepolis: More Is Not Better

 

I would be arguing how the translation from the film “Persepolis,” by Marjane Satrapithe and Vincent Parannaud, remains very traditional to the original text version of the book “Persepolis,” by Marjane Satrapithe. 

 

To prove my thesis correct I will be analyzing and determining what and why certain things were excluded, and others included from the translation from text to film. The main topics remain true as it’s translated, all the way from her childhood to her early adult life and I will discuss how what is not included in the film does not alter the gist of the story, but rather, simply removes some of the fluff, while focusing more intently on the main plot, in this case, Marjane. The topics I will focusing on are as follows:

 

  1. For the 5 points reading tools:  I will be employing the Characters, the Plot, the Narration, and Themes/Symbols. 

 

For the characters: I will talk about how Marjane’s maid and the love affair with her neighbor is completely missing from the film, seen in chapter 5 of “The Letter.” I will also mention the absence of Marjane’s boyfriend, Markus, as he is also excluded from the film. Lastly, I will mention the women in the chapter called “The Jewels” that speak ill of their own people and how they’re not mentioned in the film. I might also talk about the driver at the very end of the movie, as he is not seen in the text. 

 

For the Plot: I would be mentioning how the text opens up with “The Veil”, whereas the film opens up with Marji seen at an airport. I will also talk about the ending, where, in the movie, we see Marji in a cap with the driver asking where she’s from, and she replies “Iran”. I am mentioning this, because the text does not have this ending. Also, we see color in this last scene, which I will mention its significance. I might also incorporate the mother visiting marji in Austria, where it is not included in the film. I will make the case that excluding this in the film did not change the message of it, as the audience still understood her daughter was not doing well as an independent with all her addiction problems and homelessness she was experiencing. Again, it’s adding details, but details can be removed, while still retaining the main essence of what’s being said. 

 

For the Narration: The text is narrated by Marji herself, whereas the movie is focused on Marji’s story. This distinction makes it so that Marji becomes more of a focal point, so the cutting of irrelevant characters and scenes to accentuate Marji’s presence in the movie is optimal. 

 

  1. For the Exchange Concepts: I will use redemption.

Redemption: I will focus on the scene where Marji first denies her identity, claiming she is French and later redeems herself by saying how she is “proud to be Iranian”. I will focus on how this scene feels and hits differently from the text to the film and how the translation not only remains traditional, but is more impactful in the film with all of the sound and visual editing. 

 

  1. For FIlm Concepts: I will use color and backlighting

Color: I will focus on the color being black and white and how that alters the audience’s perception of the original text. How black and white might represent, for example memories and flashbacks. I will also mention how the last scene we see color, and why that might represent the present day. 

Backlighting: characters are glowing in this black and white film, I will say why that puts a focus on characters and why that is important for keeping it a traditional translation. 

 

  1. For Scenes: I will talk about the scene with Marji proclaiming she is “Proud to be Iranian.” This scene is very powerful in the film, which I want to get at. I also want to go in detail about the scene of her being homeless and a drug addict, as it showcases why more is not better. It gives the same message with less details, an important point I want to make about the translation.

Intro/ Thesis: The graphic memoir Persepolis by Marjane Satrapi published 2000 is about the life of Marji who was growing up at the time of the Islamic revolution. She leaves and then comes back to Iraq years later, no longer wanting to be controlled by the government or anyone she as an adult decides to move to France to continue her studies and become a person of her own. Using Linda Costanzo Cahir three types of literature-to-film translations the end scene of when Marji is at the airport on her way to move to France in the film maintains its plot and settings but leaves out minor details that are in the graphic memoir making it a traditional translation. A traditional translation maintains the overall traits of the written work (its plot, settings, and stylistic conventions) but revamps particular details in those ways that the filmmakers see as necessary and fitting.

Film Concepts:

Color – At the end of film it switches from black and white to color when she arrives in France almost like Marji is starting a new life with great possibility and leaving the end of the war which most see as bleak and depressing, but in the graphic memoir it stays black and white because it ends at the airport in Iraq with Marjs grandmother crying which is a sad scene. Even though both film and memoir end in different scenes they both maintain the plot and story line which proves it’s a traditional translation.

Sound- The sound in the film is non- diegetic at the end scenes the music changes from sad to a slow calm guitar as Marji leaves her parents and grandmother and arrives in France, almost like she is sad that she must leave but she’s content with her decision. In the graphic memoir the writer Marjane Satrapi makes you feel content with Marjis decision to leave which translates to the film.

Exchange Concept:

Sacrifice- In the film in The End scene when Marji was leaving and saying goodbye to everything and everyone, she knows to make something of herself in France the shots of the settings fade to black before changing to a different setting, when it changes to the airport setting the shot is a wide shot before Marji starting talking then it zooms in to show the emotion of what she’s giving up to pursue her dreams. The End scene in the memoir the scenes are almost all medium shot only showing from the knees and waist up and they don’t fade to black, sacrifice is shown when she’s saying goodbye to her family the illustration shows her crying but smiling at the same time and then waving at them from a far, which translates different in the film because she doesn’t look back once she says goodbye almost like if it was too hard for her to.

Termes From five Part Reading:

Character- Marji grows up and matures as a person in the graphic memoir and film the translation of this is similar but is also different.  In the end of The Dowery scene in the memoir Marji is leaving her parents to go to Vienna it illustrates her being scared of leaving by herself and crying while all the shots are medium and in the film there is movement in the background as well as her parents facial expressions giving her an encouraging smile as to not worry her, which isn’t shown in the memoir making it a necessary edit to show that even though they need her to go they don’t want her to go. In the End scene in the memoir, now as an adult she is sad but happy and content with her decision to moving on to bigger and better things when she’s in the airport and in the film she’s sad that she’s leaving her family and home country but doesn’t want to look back because it’s too hard for her meaning that she no longer needs her parents even though she wants them making it also a necessary edit to show how she’s grown up as a person.

Setting- In the memoir the scene The Dowery shows the airport where there is a guard checking Marjis bag the graphics aren’t as sharp and detailed there are figures in the background, but they are all shaded in black. In the film everything is more detailed even the people in the background and the guards face aren’t shown which helps with the translation because it gives the audience more feeling of her being in an airport with other people traveling. In the scene The End in the memoir they don’t show much of the airport like they do in the film which helps the audience see what happens after she leaves her family giving the revamp of the scene necessary.

Introduction(Gist of story and what type of Linda Cahir’s translation)

Roddy Doyle’s “New Boy” is a story about a young boy named Joseph and his experience moving from Africa to Ireland to this entirely different school system, students, and teachers. Since Joseph is a new student in his class, he struggles to fit in with his classmates and finds himself in trouble with two of the boys in his class(Seth and Christian). This story brings us along with Joseph’s timid but resilient character and how he handles being picked on by the other two boys in his class. Steph Green’s film adaption helps translate the story using traditional translation as the film and text overall have the same story, however, there are noticeable details that Green changes in the film version.

Introduction

“New Boy” written by Roddy Doyle is a story about forgiveness and new beginnings. The main character Joseph, is just a boy who has fled to Ireland after the death of his father in Africa. Throughout the film and story alike, Joseph is adapting to his new environment, particularly his new school. Both the film and story offer use a unique perspective on how Joseph is dealing with moving to Ireland and how it gives him somewhat of a sense of life back home.

Translation Type/First body

The film and the text version are traditional translations. Both film and text tells the tale of boy moving to a foreign country struggling to fit in after the death of his father. There are some differences between text and film however the overall tale are both the same. In both film and translation we also get to see the same exchange concepts in which I’ll further elaborate on later.

Five Part Reading Tool

I’ll be examining the scene where the class is taking a test in the beginning parts and then the shot switches over to a flashback of Joseph back in Africa with his father in the classroom. I’ll go over the setting and characters from the film and text version during this scene and use it to examine the meaning of the setting and the characters. For example, all flashbacks that Joseph has of his dad have been of him in school which is a interesting contrast to where Joseph is now.( a school in Ireland)

Exchange Concepts

In the ending scene, the exchange concept of forgiveness is the most present out of the 5. The Text and the film versions depict Joseph as a very humble and calm child and the other exchange concepts don’t seem to fit his character or his past. Forgiveness is an exchange concept that fits Joseph the most given the current circumstances in his life.

Film Concepts

In the Milk Scene, Non Diagetic and shots are the Fil concepts that apply the most. The Non Diagetic music playing in the confrontation in the school yard make it more intense while the shot focusing on Joseph’s face and the other boy intensifies the scene as well.

Conclusion

Joseph has a brutal past with him having to watch his father walk to his death, both film and text alike allow a us the viewer/reader to gain knowledge into Joseph’s current situation. Where he is and how he got there, and what really drives Joseph to finally fit in towards the end of the film.

New Boy portrayed on film

 

Introduction:  New Boy written by Roddy Doyle, is a short story that envelops the reader into a third person character and leads them to experience how it feels to be an outsider “The New Boy”, the reader experiences this feeling through the Protagonist ‘s mind, in this case Joseph.  This short story not only focuses on the idea of bullying and the idea of being an outsider, but also on the idea of forgiveness. As the story goes on Joseph overcomes bullying, and to a certain extent forgives his classmates, showing his pure heart.

Paragraph 1: Summary of story, and Linda Cahir’s Type of  Translation.

Based on a short story by Roddy Doyle, and film by Steph Green, the “New Boy” captures the experience of being the new boy through the eyes of a young boy named Joseph. A Nine-year-old African boy who had a rough start, after leaving his country for a better life in Ireland. But under those circumstances and as the new boy in his class, Joseph becomes an easy target, after all, he is an outsider, which makes him an easy target for the class bullies. Joseph’s mind travels back to his nonchalant past and his happy old school days. As the story goes on, we get to see Joseph’s behavior change towards his classmates Christian Kelly and Hazel O’Hara. As a result, the story and film share the same tale, This is considered a traditional translation. Which maintains the overall traits of the written work. However,  some details might be changed.

Paragraph 2: (Five part reading tool) – Setting and Character (beginning scene.)

The film portrays Joseph’s prior school years in Africa and his new school in Ireland, showing the differences between schooling in different parts of the world from his point of view. I’ll discuss the difference between the setting and the characters in the story and film. I will talk about the flashbacks he gets at the beginning of the story where he thinks about his school back home and connects it to his new school in Ireland. Furthermore, I’ll detail the difference between his professors, classroom environment and more. Through this Joseph lets the reader experience what it feels like to be an outsider through his eyes.

Paragraph 3: (Two film concepts) –  Non diegetic and mise en scene (milk scene.)

Then I will go into depth and explain how the non-diegetic sound is being used in the milk scene. When Joseph goes to the backyard different sounds go on, especially when the milk gets thrown at him and hits the wall. This makes the film more intense and dramatic. After this, I’ll proceed to talk about the mise en scene of the film and explain the similarities and differences that the story and film have.

Paragraph 4: (Exchange concept) – do you think there is justice or forgiveness in this story? Should Joseph forgive the boys at the end of the story? (Ending scene)

Lastly, I will discuss the last scene where Joseph and the boys get in trouble. Here I will discuss if there is any type of justice or forgiveness from Joseph’s side toward the boys, after what they did to him. I’ll discuss the ending scene giving my thoughts on if I believe Joseph should forgive the boys or not.

Conclusion: New Boy is a story that lets the reader experience what it feels like to be an outsider through his eyes. As readers we experience, and feel all the emotions, and thoughts that go through Joseph’s head. Making it easier for us to understand why he acts and does the things he does.
