New Boy film vs text

Introduction (includes a summary of the story and emphasizes what type of Chair’s translation it is)

Films are always enjoyable to watch whether it’s action, suspenseful, or horror films. Although all films deal with a different set of characters and stories there are multiple times where it is a reincarnation of a story written in text or in a comic style. Most of these films aren’t fully translated word for word from their predecessor. A current example would be the film New Boy which is a traditional translation of the short story “New Boy” written by Robby Doyle. The story revolves around Joseph’s experience as a refugee going to a new school in Ireland with kids he has never met before. He encounters the students, and the issues begin as to them he is a new boy in their class. As a result, the film and text share the same story, but it is considered a traditional translation as the film is the director’s interpretation of the story.

Body #1 (Five-part reading tool)

Begin to discuss the Setting and Plot and distinguish the film vs text version based on the flashback scenes. (The difference in the text of him in school with his father vs school in Ireland)

Body #2 (Film concepts)

Explain the film concepts like diegetic sound, non-diegetic, and colors of the scenes. Use the scene of the flashback when he is in school vs school in Ireland of the film. Discuss the diegetic and non-diegetic sounds these scenes make and the color palette difference of the flashback compared to the present scene. (Flashback scene = happy guitar non-diegetic sound and colorful palette, present scene = dull color palette and no guitar background noise just diegetic sound)

Body #3 (Exchange concept)

Use the last scene of the story where the boys get told off by their teacher and explain how Joseph forgave the kids that were at first bullying him but now they are laughing together.

 Conclusion

Sum up all the points you made when comparing the film and the short story of New Boy and explain how the film is a traditional translation. End with the lesson the story tries to teach about forgiveness.

Translating  Roddy Doyle, “New Boy” (2007)

The story of “New Boy,” written by Roddy Doyle, depicts nine-year-old Joseph’s first day of school in Ireland after he moved from Africa  to the different environment and school system. The main characters in which the movie and story revolve are Joseph , Teacher lady , Seth Quinn, Christan kelly and Hazel O’Hara. The setting took place in school of ireland .

The first topic I’d want to talk about is narrative. The story is portrayed through the eyes of Joseph, a nine-year-old African refugee who is starting school in Ireland for the first time. The film alternates between scenes of Joseph’s prior school in Africa and his new school in Ireland, showing the differences between schooling in his native country and Ireland from his perspective. Joseph’s insightful perspective on the various ties between instructor and student in both countries is offered to us.

I Will discuss the milk scene that occurs in the New Boy.While Green presents an overly colorful picture of Doyle’s story that contains some new elements, the film nearly precisely follows the original story in the conclusion, and so conforms to Linda Cahir’s traditional  translation.

In the movie the milk scene where Christan kelly threw a milk carton to Joseph has so many similarities and differences which i can tell my readers. First i will talk about sound in the difference and the main difference that i notice was non diegetic sound in that milk scene in the background there was instrument playing that was not in the movie but you they add in the movie to seems more dramatic it also allows the audience the ability to connect emotionally to your characters and their situation.

The similarities I noticed was mise en scene, in both film and text, both scenes took place in the playground when they have lunch break ,all the characters are the same in both film and text. But in the movie the after he threw the milk on joseph was not potrate in detail as text. The way joseph try to take his sweater to wash it but he notice that his shirt also wet so there is no way to wash .

In conclusion ,New Boy is a hat immerses the audience in the mind of a third-person character and allows them to experience what it’s like to be an outsider “The New Boy.” The audience experiences this emotion through the mind of the Protagonist, in this instance “Joseph.”
