Dialogue

Judge: Why are we here today?

Lawyer: We are here to defend my client, a CUNY college student, for a measly misdemeanor. All he was trying to do was get to school.

Prosecutor: Your honor, the defendant purposely jumped the turnstile on Monday, November 4th, 2019, around 2:45 pm. When police officers tried to approach him he tried to escape and when an officer finally got a hold of him and asked why he jumped the turnstile he said “Because he’s a CUNY student and deserves free transportation.”

Judge: At this moment you have the opportunity to defend your client against the prosecutor.

Lawyer: As his Lawyer I have done some thorough research and investigated his crime very precisely. I researched that the average CUNY student cant afford transportation, food, or buy other necessities due to low incomes. We have to provide a program for CUNY students so they can excel in school and maintain a 3.0 GPA average, so they can get a free metro card.

Protesters: Fair fare, they don’t care, CUNY students treated unfair, 3.0 GPA, no need to pay, what do you say?

Prosecutor: I disagree

Protestor: Fair fare, They don’t care, CUNY students treated unfair, 3.0 G.P.A, no need to pay what do you say?

Prosecutor: There are already programs such as ASAP that provide free metro cards for CUNY students. If we add Bachelors students to that program how are we going to fund it? According to the CUNY website, both the city and state supports the ASAP program along with other grant funds. Therefore I REFUSE TO GIVE MY TAX DOLLAR TO STUDENTS WHO JUST GOING TO DROP OUT.

Lawyer: Telling them that they are required to maintain a 3.0 G.P.A will HELP to motivate them to stay in school. Do you even know why half these students drop out? Its because some of them are low income students who struggles to make a living to provide for themselves. One of their most costly expenses is transportation. And along with tuition, food, books, and other necessities that they need. Do you think its possible for CUNY students to go to school with all these expenses.

Judge: Based on the evidence and research that was displayed in this court house today, Bob did break the law and him being an low income student doesn’t give him the right to break the law. Due to a measly misdemeanor the victim will have to face jail time for his actions.

Prosecutor: (Jumps up for Victory)

Lawyer: Oh my gosh. I’m so sorry Bob. (Starts crying)

Judge: The victim will have to serve 10 days in jail and will have to do 30 hours of community service. I declare this case closed. Thank you for your attendance.

Lawyer: THIS IS NOT RIGHT!

Everyone: Fair fare, they don’t care, CUNY students treated unfair, 3.0 G.P.A, No need to pay, what do you say?
