Christina Cantone, Coates’ Critique

I have mixed feelings about the reading. The author used a lot of description to set the scene for the reader. On the other hand when the bridge was described it was a place of memory. These memories were both positive and negative for the main character. The bridge is a symbol for both happy memories and the memories of those who were lost. This gave the story a bit of a suspenseful mood which was a bit eerie. The feeling of uneasiness through the story was finally dealt with  when the bridge collapsed beneath the main character as he tried to cross it.

One question I had was did they ever know why the bridge collapsed ?

I agree that the bridge seems to be this place where happy and sad memories are represented by the author. On one side he remembers his mother on the bridge but on the other side, he remembers that it is also the last memories that he has about her which makes him sad.
