Ann Patchett’s Truth & Beauty paints a picture of finding a friendship when your least looking for it. The sequence of going from passing strangers to living with each other and having someone to confide in is beautiful. I really enjoyed that fact that the narrator gave Lucy the benefit of the doubt. She barley spoke to her in their previous school but here she is helping her find a place to live and it transitions into them living together and building a strong bond. She protects Lucy when Lucy doesn’t even know it from strangers staring at her. The whole first chapter was just very interesting, the great use of imagery help me paint a picture of Lucy might look like and that was really helpful.

Question: Why is the narrator so willing to listen to all of Lucy’s stories with men?
