Reading chapter one of ‘Truth & Beauty’ by Ann Patchett definitely shows how Ann did not hold any grudges against Lucy after finishing Sarah Lawrence High School. Lucy did not pay attention to Ann. Ann would say “hi” to Lucy but Lucy would not respond to her. Ann knew a lot more about Lucy because of everyone talked about Lucy and admire her because of her poems. However, Lucy ask Ann to help find an apartment for her in Iowa, but they decided to live together to divide the rent. Lucy and Ann relationship changed when they move it together. Lucy became a lot more personal to Ann, and was even willing to talk about her sex life. They seem more like best friend during their time in Iowa. Basically, I liked that Ann did not hold any grudges against Lucy, and how she was still willing to help Lucy even when Lucy ignored her in high school. However, after reading chapter one I do question myself about Ann being as open to Lucy?
Hello Rampersoud,
Great analysis of the reading. It is true that they have later become friends even though at the beginning things were not going well between them due to Lucy’s behavior towards Ann. They needed time to get closer and to become best friends and they eventually did. Why do you think Ann never mentioned Lucy’s risky behaviors with men even though they were best friends?
Hi Robert, I also liked the Ann did not hold any grudges toward Lucy. Had she not forgiven Lucy, their relationship would not have grown the way that it did.
