I really enjoyed reading the first chapter of Truth & Beauty by Ann Patchett, and the intricacies of how her friendship with Lucy evolved. The way the all the details of Lucy’s life were public and everyone knew about them even without asking or trying to find out shows us how being known in a social group can affect a person, with Lucy apparently not noticing and not being open to Patchett. This shows how differently Patchett and Lucy viewed their relationship at the start, with Patchett knowing most of Lucy’s personal life while Lucy probably knew very little of Patchett. Lucy’s reaction to Patchett approaching her are therefore understandable. However once they start interacting their relationship grows as Patchett still wanted to have a potential friendship with Lucy even after being mostly ignored by her during their early years interacting.
