What I really enjoyed from the first chapter of Truth & Beauty by Ann Patchett was the way that she described how confused she felt with the beginning of her friendship with Lucy without making Lucy seem like a cold hearted person. It was nice to see that she had no hard feelings towards Lucy because of how she was when they were in Sarah Laurance, whenever she would try to make conversations with her Lucy would end up just staring at her as if she had three eyes or something. It was very sweet that Ann went off to go out of her way to keep in mind both of their budgets for an apartment in Iowa, not just her own budget. Even if it meant that they were going to have to share an apartment together and become roommates. The aftermath was Lucy feeling comfortable enough to open to Ann about anything, even her sex life. So my question is, did Ann ever try to tell Lucy sleeping with men was not the best way to have them fall in love with them? Was the way Lucy’s face looked the only reason why she felt she would never get the attention from a man?
Hi Diana,
I like how you mentioned why Lucy felt the need to be with men so desperately and tried to keep them by having sex with them. I also think as you do that she had many insecurities about the way she looked, got bullied for that, and felt that nobody would ever love her. Why do you think Ann wanted to be closer and and closer to her at the beginning even though Lucy was giving unwelcoming remarks to her attempts for acquaintance and friedship? Later she never judged Lucy’s mistakes with men, is that because she admired her achievements and being the best student at school so much that she really never thought that these actions were actually wrong?
Hi Diana, I was also confused by the beginning of Lucy and Patchett’s friendship. I wonder why Lucy was so nice to her when she arrived at the apartment. Hopefully it is something that revealed later in the book.
