What I enjoyed about Patchett’s work is how descriptive she is when talking about a person or a place, and how well she uses words to bring her characters to life. I like that she gives backstories of her and Lucy’s life such as her car accident, Lucy’s multiple surgeries, and describes what she and Lucy’s relationship was like in high school. By doing that, she gives her readers an idea of who they were and how their story/ friendship take shape over the years.
Another thing I liked was how her writing flows smoothly from one scene to the next. But what I enjoyed most about her writing is how well she tells Lucy’s story not only from her perspective, but she brings Lucy’s character to life by using direct quotes and share her personal letters so her reader can build a direct connection to Lucy through Lucy’s own words.
One question I have is, why did Ann wanted so badly to be Lucy friend even in high school, was it because Lucy was popular or because of her own experience (her car accident) she felt like she could relate to Lucy?
Hi Nickay, same here i really enjoyed how Patchett was very open to the reader about Lucys life and her hardships, it really lets the reader know how shes like. I also liked how she added direct quotes from Lucy aswell.
Hi Nickay, I also loved how well Patchett described Lucy’s harsh past, from the accident to the multiple surgeries that she endured. I actually felt sorry for Lucy after hearing about how disfigured her face had become and how she kept to herself. I’m also not sure why she chose to be Lucy’s friend. Lucy had never shown her any form of respect until they ended up living together. I think it was a combination of fascination Ann had for Lucy’s life combined with Lucy also being popular and talented.
