Discussion #1

The reason why Wollstonecraft is writing this letter is to express her own views of the rights of women. She identifies issues such as the natural rights of mankind and how women are excluded from this. She states that there are no defenses made to prove why women do not have reason. With that being said, that creates a flaw in the New Constitution, which is based on reason. I would describe Wollstonecraft’s discourse community as a women’s rights DC. The recipient seems as though he is against the morals that were presented in the letter.

Discussion #2

Young is presenting a speech expressing her views on disability. She reminds the crowd how the media portrays disabled people and makes it out to be a bad thing. The issue she identifies in her speech is that the media objectifies disabled people for the benefit of nondisabled people. Young emphasizes that the shame must come to an end and stop believing that “things can be worse.” Young is a part of a discourse community that’s sole purpose is to advocate for the disabled people who are tired of being congratulated for still being alive despite the circumstances. Young also explains that the goal of this discourse community is to make disabilities a norm in society and to show more respect to the people who are disabled.
