Quote 1: “In addition, discourse communities both influence and are influenced by the larger communities within which they are situated.. In consequence, when a university becomes established in a town, the presence of this constellation of discourse communities influences the wider urban environment; as a result, the urban environment provides services that are helpful to the university, such as cheap student housing, cheap restaurants, museums, and more bookshops, which in turn further consolidates our sense of a university town like Cambridge, Heidelberg, or Uppsala.”

I found this quote compelling because we allow discourse communities to be influenced by the larger communities as in who participates. We are the community that makes the discourse community no matter where we are located. I agreed with the statement that discourse community influences the wider urban environment. 

Quote 2: “As this interest in the concept has proliferated, we have come to see that these communities are, in fact, differentiated by various factors, such as how localized they are, what origins they have had, and what types of activity are central to their existence. So, it is the main purpose of this section to offer a categorization of different types of discourse community; if you will, to draw an outline map of the discourse community territory.”

I found this quote compelling because discourse communities can be differentiated by various factors, but we are a part of many different discourse communities such as if we participate in the same working field, play a certain sport, attend a certain school. We participate every single day in these different discourse communities. It makes us who we are.
