Frederick Douglass states that ” The sunlight that brought life and healing to you, has brought stripes and death to me”. Meaning that freedom whites fought for didn’t free blacks from the pain and suffering. The freedom won was not for people of color but for the ones who oppressed them even after freedom.

Frederick Douglass says “Would you have me argue that man is entitled to liberty? that he is the rightful owner of his own body? You have already declared it.” Meaning that no matter how much he argues and proves that blacks are free and have rights it is ineffective. In the minds of whites it is already made up that blacks are not entitled to be free but to be controlled by others.
