“A discourse community is a group of people who share a set of discourses, understood as basic values and assumptions, and ways of communicating about their goals. Linguist John Swales defined discourse communities as “groups that have goals and purposes, and use communication to achieve their goals.”
The discourse communities I am a part of are the African American group, I am a part of women in computer engineering, and also volleyball community. The goals of my African American group have been to enforce police reform, mandate stricter covid protocol, During covid, most minority groups that are living in poverty were stuck with minimum wage jobs while having to pay taxes. Whereas the rich people who invade taxes got away in their vacation homes to live in luxury having parties and without caring about the poor people. The people of my African American community are not ignorant and we acknowledge and address the inequality in society. The goal of my computer engineering group of women is to bring in more people into stem majors. We want to provide opportunities for women to grow in this field without having to face any kind of discomfort such as discrimination. I have been a part of the volleyball community ever since 5th grade. I love playing volleyball with my friends and we hold tournaments amongst ourselves to strengthen our skills.
