Quote 1: “Code 236 on the six.”

I feel connected to this quote because I belong to the discourse community, such as the military. We use such quotes above to pass the information we don’t want civilians to understand. Just like Linguist John Swale explains, a discourse community is “a group of communities that have a goal and purpose, and use communication to achieve their goal.” In my discourse community, we use those sets of codes and even more complex codes to communicate among our community, such as the military, with the ultimate goal and purpose of executing any task present to us as a team.

Quote 2: “Community of practice.”

I feel connected to this quote because I find myself as part of that discourse community in that community of practice basically talks about the process of entry, apprenticeship, membership, seniority, and exit through retirement, death, and translocation. I, as an individual, was an apprentice some years back while I was in Africa. I learn the trade of water systems and heating techniques of conducting material with that particular community. Furthermore, when I got to the United States, I joined a community practice with the United States Air Force in Texas. Over there, I practiced more complex water systems and machine components as a member of that apprenticeship community of practice. Â
