Summary: The passage by Edward J. Tully talks about why a lot of police abuse their power and use it towards others. Since they have more power than civilians because of them having their badge, firearm, and uniform they tend to be corrupted and abuse people because of it. And since they are doing what’s right to themselves they think they are doing god’s work. They overuse and abuse their power and try to get their way and what they want like using their power for sex, money, demanding others to do certain things, or causing them physical or mental damage. And since they use it so much they slowly become corrupted and not feel guilty about what they do. Police slowly realized that certain people admire them and respect them so they would get favors from people who respect them, whether it could be items that are expensive or free food to them.

Reflection: This passage shows the reasons why there are a lot of corrupted cops because they overuse their power for their own benefits and they try to take advantage of people who either really admire them or are scared of them to use their power against. They use their power to get their way and they think that they are above the law because they have a badge and a gun and are able to arrest, kill, and put people in jail legally. And because of that badge their mind becomes corrupted and they use their power as they see fit while doing their job that’s God’s Work. And that they will use people for desires or for greed and after the first few times they will get used to it and they won’t see anything wrong with what they are doing.

Quotation: “Another common mistake occurs when officers with deficient personalities use their power to supplement their personal inadequacies. In other words, they take advantage of the powers they have to enrich themselves at the expense of others. This type of abuse may take the form of obtaining sex, money, or by demeaning others, physically or psychologically, for their own psychological need or gratification. Misusing power for individual gratification eventually leads to increasing levels of corruption. At some point, this type of individual in law enforcement inevitably steps across the line and the conduct becomes criminal in nature.”

“We have all had that feeling at one time during our careers in dealing with scumbags. Since the consequences of an error of judgment in doing God’s work is so great, an officer must be constantly on guard against any actions based on this feeling.”

“Lastly, law enforcement officers have to realize that many people admire them because they are police officers and will tend to give them favors as a means to express their admiration. These favors may take the form of free coffee, sex, tickets to the ball game, or a reduced price for a washing machine. “
