One moment in the essay that really caught my eye, was a line that not only sums up the idea of the article really well, but touch’s on the purpose as well. “The goal is to carefully consider the choices the author made and the techniques that he or she used, and then decide whether you want to make those same choices or use those same techniques in your own writing”. The reason to think about things critically and analyze a writers choices is for progress in your own writing. I really love to write and a lot of the progress I’ve made as a writer is from reading similar things to my style. And though its great for undersatnding the story it also builds the evidence for the counter argument.
Often I want to read to read. Simply to enjoy the medium and fall in love with the writing. And though understanding the author is a really great way to enjoy the plot that’s not always what you want. I fully think that the skill should be developed, and it’s very useful especially in an academic setting. But sometimes it’s better to just enjoy what your reading. A lot of my preferred readings are story based and are mostly fantasy and adventure. I love to get lost in the plot. Felling a part o the world and close with the characters. And I feel like that’s not as enjoyable if your slowing down to think critically. Understanding the choices a character makes for plot development and character arcs, takes away from believing in the story.
