The pieces by Douglass, Malcolm X, and Jiang all fall under “ education narratives “ because all 3 express how learning a technique , language or educating themselves shaped them into who they’ve become. Malcom X wrote about learning a new language and how hard it can be and how dedicated you have to be as well. He says ”I saw that the best thing I could do was get hold of a dictionary – to study, to learn some words.” By learning English he was able to know what type of society he was living in. He was now aware of his surroundings. Douglass’ piece had a similar purpose to Malcome X. With the help of books he was able to educate himself about slavery and how people were treating them. He states ”You will be free as soon as you are twenty-one, but I am a slave for life! Have not I as good a right to be free as you have?” He learned how unfair African American were being pursued by white people. This made Douglass see the real world. Jiang’s piece falls under the education narrative as well because she expresses how viewing a painting and having multiple questions about it was fascinating to her not only that but she realized that each detail in the drawing symbolizes something important. And acknowledging this interest made her realize her passion. “ I can analyze Mona Lisa professionally, not with jargon and scholarship, but with my heart” With realizing her interest in life she was able to identify her career in life that was going to make her the happiest.
