Douglass, Malcolm X, Jiang all talk about the importance of education and how education reflects in their own lives. They all say different things for example in Douglass narrative he states, “opened my eyes to the horrible pit, but to no ladder upon which to get out. In moments of agony, I envied my fellow-slaves for their stupidity. opened my eyes to the horrible pit, but to no ladder upon which to get out. In moments of agony, I envied my fellow-slaves for their stupidity.” Here he states that since all the slaves did not have an education, they did not realize that they were in such a horrible place. Him understand what was written in the book represented his education and it is almost as if his blindness was cured. It was an eye opener and education made a drastic change in his life. Jiang in a way also touched upon the importance of education. Her example of education was the analyzation of the Mona Lisa. The way that education can connect people no matter what age. She states, “a warm memory of two illiterate women who were sixty years apart standing in front of the Mona Lisa wanting their confusion to be understood and their curiosity to be expanded.” That education, the curiosity of learning something new can start from young or from old. That there always time to learn something new. Curiosity brings people together. In Malcom X story he also that reading was almost a drive. That his goal was to become smarter as we see in this quote, “As I see it today, the ability to read awoke inside me some long dormant craving to be mentally alive.” Education to him was his drive. That why he says that it’s important. All the text has one thing in common and that is to convey the reader the education is important. Education can help you become self-aware and more prone to analyzing society, like it did with Douglas, or help you connect with other people like it did with Jiang, or education can give you a drive to accomplish your goals like it did with Malcom X.
