I like the picture on the left because it shows broad light/split light. Lighting hits the ear and half of the face while the shadow is on the other side of the face. I also like that the shadow is more noticeable, helps me better understand the type of lighting in this portrait photo.

I like the picture on the right because it shows short light. Light from the left hits most of the face with the side of face and ear being dark.
