My response to Discussion 1

  1. Bey uses photography to find his voice by him wanting people to experience events that they have not been in physically. One of his projects that highlights this is the “Night Coming Tenderly, Black” exhibition. This exhibition was about recreating the events of the Underground Railroad. The photos are dark unknown places because Bey wants the viewer to experience what slaves were going through when escaping.
  2. Weems uses photography to find her voice by using photos to tell a story. Weems’ work, “The Kitchen Table Series”, is about what goes on within a family. Her goal for this work is to show the relationships between family members.
  3. I can find my own voice by using symbolism and context in my photos to show or describe something and not make it too obvious. I want the viewer to know what I’m trying to say through my photos.
