SHITTY FIRST DRAFT RESPONSE

1. Even the best authors or writers have a shitty first draft
2. Very few writers really know what they are doing until they’ve done it.
3. you will go through many drafts until you have thee paper
4. The first draft is the child’s draft.
5. Almost all good writing begins with terrible first efforts. You need to start
somewhere.

“One writer I know tells me that he sits down every morning and says to
himself nicely, “It’s not like you don’t have a choice, because you do — you can
either type, or kill yourself.”” Anne Lamott definitely got my attention with this line. Any time I write any piece of literature or paper, I rarely have a choice. It just has to get done. I love myself so the thought of killing myself never comes into play, so I write my shitty first draft and work on it until I feel that is presentable and acceptable by the reader.

“You just let this childlike part of you channel whatever voices and visions
come through and onto the page.” The best way to write any paper is to be innocent as a child would be. I can relate to this because that is how my writing process begins.

The author wrote this to make those who write see that even the greatest writers start out shitty and become great.

One question I would ask the author, “would planning out your writing lead to a less shitty piece and making the writer a lot more comfortable about their work?

Practice, practice, practice all I ever heard in my childhood days. The author definitely caught my eye with this compelling idea in this article. My father use to say this everyday, when I would say what I wanted to be or dream of, anything is possible once you practice at it. He was right, but as a child it goes in one ear and eventually goes out eh other.
Another thing that stood out to me was the whole idea of short term memory. I feel that is the worst, when it comes to certain things you need to remember but falls in the short span of memory.

This piece was mainly facts, so there is little to none for me to argue against.

A question I would ask the artist would be, “What did you not practice at earlier in your life that you wish you had?”

The main idea I think the author was trying to relay to the reader was in order to succeed at a sport, instrument, or anything in life you have to exhibit passion and practice but mainly love what you do. Even a blindfolded chess master can win do to the love and dedication of the game.

How would you feel if you knew you had the greatest idea, thought, response, or concept but some reader couldn’t understand it due to bad grammar? How woild you know if your grammatically incorrect? Many writer ideas are misunderstood because they forget to proof read to spot any grammatical errors. Grammatical errors are serious problems when you need to comprehend your idea. Although grammar is important some are unintentional but drastic when it comes to getting your point across.

essay #2 My neighborhood compared to Time Square

Courtney Lewis

Times Square the place that never sleeps! Tourist epicenter. You can find people walking at all times of the day and night. Bright Lights all time round. Con Edison is always happy. All races are blended in one big melting pot. Entrepreneurs are everywhere! Street vendors, street artists, Disney characters, cartoon characters, even Naked Cowboy and Cowgirl are all out to hustle for their pay. Yellow cabs, metro buses, Green cabs, and the subway system are all available to you to travel further than your feet can take you all for the right price. Retail stores, Restaurants, and Mom and Pop stores are everywhere, guaranteeing that will spend all of your money and regret it later.

My current neighbor is in Brooklyn Heights. I live on Henry street. The most boring street ever! It is like being deaf and having no hearing aid. You rarely hear noise. I even feel the people whisper when they walk on my block. I love it! All the people that past are usually tourist going to see the promenade or just walking around to see the neighborhood. School buses and Access-a-Ride take over the streets. I feel at night it gets colder than the rest of Brooklyn! a few blocks up to Clark street there is a train station. The 2 or 3 trains run there. There is where I feel civilization begins. Businesses are all over. They have everything you can imagine to purchase you just have to know where to go. Organic products epicenter. Everything is organic or somewhat healthy. Restaurants are slightly more upper class and expensive for no reason. The plus of the area is the Promenade. The View pf the city is breathe taking at times. It is kind of water down a little because I live there for two and a half years now.

Observations:

Orwell’s descriptive language paints a clear picture to the reader.
Despite Orwell’s aversion to shooting the elephant, he becomes suddenly aware that he will lose face and be humiliated if he does not shoot it. He therefore shoots the elephant. The death itself is sustained in excruciating detail. After three shots, the elephant still does not die. Orwell fires his two remaining shots into the elephant’s heart. He sends someone to get his small rifle, then pours “shot after shot into his heart and down his throat.” I’m glad that wasn’t me.

Another aspect of the reading I noticed, although he knew what he had to do while killing the elephant I sort of felt that he didn’t want to kill that elephant. I felt it was all the imperialistic actions of his surroundings that his sould cried but had to fit in with everyone.

Compelling moments:

Orwell candidly depicts his unsympathetic actions both in shooting the elephant and in the aftermath, when he is among his fellow British police officers. He is relieved, he admits, that the coolie died, because it gave him a pretext for shooting the elephant. As far as his fellow officers are concerned, he did the right thing. As far as the natives are concerned, he saved face. Yet Orwell concludes, “I often wondered whether any of the others grasped that I had done it solely to avoid looking a fool.”

Question:

Does imperialism destroy one’s own dignity & freedom?

AUTHORS PURPOSE

Orwell’s purpose, however, is more than one person’s descriptive narrative about the beginning of an awareness. “Shooting an Elephant” captures a defining experience of going against one’s own humanity at the cost of a part of that humanity.

Mother Tongue Response By Courtney Lewis

The practice of language will strengthen the power of your tongue.
Reading this passage will have you considering everything that has to do with how words are meant to be placed together to significantly get a point across. The way in which she starts the piece already had me considering to properly pick my words. the strategic transitions clearly shows she can’t turn it off. She continuously refers to her parents use of language and how it influenced her change and love of language.

Why is it such a big deal on the type of English you use to convey an idea or thought?

The type of English you use definitely helps the idea become concrete to the person you are trying to convince or the reader of the piece of literature. She also focuses on the environment and how much of an influence it can have on your the way you speak. Subsequently, language can only help you express your best thoughts and perspectives clearly.

I have a dream response – Courtney Lewis

I Have a Dream speech by Martin Luther King Jr is such an empowering speech not only for equality but for all dreamers. A dream is only a dream until you try to pursue the dream. Martin Luther King definitely pursued the dream not only for him but everyone who was a victim of inequality. The speech not only called for equality for Negros but for the rights of all people. That showed the total equality of men, women, and children. He could have been selfish with his dream and focused primarily on the African Americans who were clearly suffering.

“We can’t walk alone”, Martin Luther King Jr had asked for unity, a unity that can;t be broken or destroyed for the better. Unified we stand divided we will fall. Martin Luther King Jr saw the road of destruction that was not only being walked but what could be next for humanity. We all have a calling in this life we live, but King’s path was dedicated to change and bravery. The speech always has me thinking what I would have said if I were in his shoes. I don’t think I would be as powerful as him but, I definitely would try to allow my voice to be heard.

“I have a dream today”, this means he would never live out his dream. Martin Luther King Jr already know he wouldn’t be able to see his dream come true because change never occurs over night. He never lost the attention of his followers, protesters, and believers and that is where he felt success in his actions, procedures, and beliefs.

The way the speech was ended, “Free at last! Free at last! Thank God Almighty, we are free at last” signified that all normal way of thinking was over and the free way of thought had begun. A thought that freedom is the goal and must be achieved. Martin Luther King Jr’s dream had begun to come true.

My life in 3rd person

December 20th 2012, Courtney Lewis moved out of his parents house and swore to never comeback. It was his first attempt in becoming an independent young adult. Courtney’s parents tried to persuade him not leave, but it surely did not work. Courtney moved all the way to Brooklyn, in the Dumbo area. He was free to d as he pleased. He was not one hundred percent sure of what he had gotten himself into but, it had to be done. the first day of Courtney’s independence went well and he began to enjoy it. The second day in his apartment, he heard a noise and he almost left and went back to his parent’s house but as he tried to run out, he thought about a he would lose, plus he will be teased if he returned. Courtney decided to stick it out for the night. The next morning Courtney went and bought a Doberman for protection. He realized the dog couldn’t do much because he is still a puppy. He heard the noise again and he went to the doorman to call the super-intendant. The super-intendant simply told him that it was just the pipes. He felt like a complete idiot. Courtney is never going back to his parents house unless he needs anything like food or even a lamp.
