Project 1: Lines

We began our project by using 3 basic shapes such as squares, triangles, and circles, all of which contained different sorts of lines like verticals, horizontals, and arcs. Considering we could only use one type of line per drawing made this assignment a little difficult at first. We had to make 12 thumbnails after the first three Sketches, it was at this stage that I discovered how many ideas and patterns I could create with only one type of line.

At this point, we had a better understanding of how lines and figures work, as well as the endless ideas that anyone could come up with. We showed our drawings to each other in groups so that we could get feedback on them and chose which ones to utilize for our final pieces. After making several modifications to the original thumbnails, I realized that the number of designs I could create was huge if I utilized my creativity. After choosing all 4 designs we had to make them in 4×4 dimensions and in pen, which in my opinion made the last piece look more professional.

In the last piece, I knew I had to take my time and effort. It was really frustrating making every single line for “intense”, one by one, and finding the exact position for the triangles on “Loyalty”. Deciding which arc to make thicker or thinner while designing “conflict”. The fact that we were only allowed to use one type of line for each Thumbnail made it even more interesting and despite my limits, I was able to express my ideas on each design. In Closing, we see these lines throughout our daily lives. If you go outside, you will notice all of the objects, buildings, and structures and how they all have some form of line integrated into them, whether it is painted on the sidewalk, the wheels of a car, or even the simple design of a book. Project 1 encouraged me to see lines differently and to appreciate how powerful they can be if creativity is applied.
