Each week you will need to respond to two questions posted. Your response should be a minimum of 150 words for both questions. You should also include at least one response to your fellow students. The responses are a requirement for participation part of your grade.
Question 01 –
Why do you think that the low poly portrait should only be made up of triangles, rather than other polygons? If the portrait is made up of only four-sided shapes, rather than triangles, how do you think it would impact the overall design?
Question 02 –
When would it be useful to add multiple fills to a particular shape in a design? Give an example of a specific object (ie., Clothing, Nature, Food, etc.) that would benefit from having multiple fills when designed in illustrator.
Low poly portraits are made up of triangles they can perfectly fit together without any gaps or distortions. With triangles it’s easier to do it with different angles capturing different parts of a face in detail.
Adding several fills to a shape can be useful when you want to create a texture. depth, to a design to enhance its visual interest and make it more real.
Question 1-
I believe the low poly portrait should only be made up of triangles rather than other polygons for simplicity. A triangle only has three sides compared to any other shape making it easy to create and to blend in. A triangle can also form any shape when combined. If we were to use a shape like a rectangle instead of a triangle, it might not have blended in so easily but instead look blocky. Triangles help the low poly portrait seem more abstract and less about the shape.
Question 2-
Adding Multiple fills to a particular shape in a design adds interest, depth, and complexity to the design. Something colorful is more interesting to lock at compared to something dull and one color. Adding multiple colors could also add depth because with darker shades you can create shadows and with lighter shades you can create highlights. You can also you gradients to add dimensions and make a circle into a sphere. An example of when multiple fills can be useful is for food, like a pizza. One fill can be for the crust and you can multiple fills on top to create some toppings. Another fill that can be used is a darker shade to create a shadow.
Question 1: The low poly portrait should only be made up of triangles, rather than other polygons because triangles are very simple and are the easiest shapes to create and work with. When you put triangles in a low poly portrait, it makes the portrait look unique and creative since the triangles are flat and curved. There are designers that used triangles in 3D Model Projects such as doing figures of people and Geometric artworks. Triangles add more detail on the person’s face when you do angles and curves that give features. That’s how I think that the low poly portrait should only be made up of triangles. If the portrait is made up of only four-sided shapes, rather than triangles, it could have different results. The other shapes such as rectangles, shapes, circles, and hexagon would be hard to place in the poly portrait especially when they are four sided. It would make the face don’t have depth and movement.
Question 2: It would be useful to add multiple fills to a particular shape in a design to create effects that are unique. Designers can adjust the properties when they have their fills as a layer. Adding Multiple fills can provide visual depth. For Example, a flower pot with leaves that represents Nature. It can benefit because you can add a shadow on the pot by using the shape builder tool and make the opacity low and make it half, so it creates a shadow. So, it shows that the shadow is going towards the flower pot that adds dimension. Same with the leaves, you can do half light by adding a light green and half shadow where you have low opacity of a rectangle and use the shape builder tool to make a half shadow of the leaf. Adding multiple fills can make your design more detailed.
1. I think the low poly portrait should only consist of triangles rather than other polygons because triangles are simple shapes that cannot be deformed without changing their form. Triangles also fill gaps that are not visible when you’re using other shapes; since triangles are straight lines, they more accurately fill gaps and ensure alignment. Additionally, triangles convey more curves and angles on a person’s face. Low poly art helps with simple features while still incorporating the necessary curves to define important parts of the face, including movement and depth. If the low poly portrait were made out of four-sided shapes instead of triangles, it would eventually lose its detail and the movement of a person’s face, which makes the features look flatter. Four-sided shapes also tend to be more difficult to work with, especially if you’re trying to fill in those gaps for a certain part of the face.
2. It would be useful to add multiple fills to a particular shape in a design such as clothing because you can create more depth and dimension, such as highlights and shadows. These things can make a flat piece look 3D with those simple fills. You can create texture and use different colors to outstand the design, making it more pleasing to your audience. Each layer would have its own fill, like your base, then texture, highlight, and shadows.
Question 01:
Low poly portraits are better with triangles because they fit into any space easily even if there are complex curves. Triangles create smooth transitions between areas which helps the portrait look more detailed and complete. If four-sided shapes were used instead, the design might appear blocky or uneven, especially on curved surfaces. Rectangles or squares don’t align as easily and can make the portrait feel stiff. Triangles also add a more dynamic and geometric look, which is key to low poly art. Using other polygons could flatten the design.
Question 02:
Multiple fills are useful for adding depth or texture to a design. For example, when designing a leaf in Illustrator, one fill can provide the base color, another can add a gradient to show light and shadow, and a pattern fill can create the veins. This makes the object look more natural. Multiple fills also work well for clothing, adding patterns or textures over solid colors to create more detailed designs.
Low poly images should be triangles because they are the best shape for giving definition to images and much easier to arrange as well. Triangles are the least difficult shape to use, it can be very adaptable where it can be able to create rounded edges and curves with different styles of triangles. It’s all about how creative you can be with your low poly image. If the low poly image was made out of a 4 sided shape like a square I believe that it would be much more blocky, where the result of the piece may have different outcomes. It’s also harder to alter the sides you want for your low poly image but I think it could be very successful but a little more effort and patience is needed to make a low poly image with only 4 sided shapes.
The impact of the design may not be very drastic but it will have a different outcome.
It would be useful to add multiple fills to a particular design when the shape could use more depth or shadow to create different effects to your image. For example when making something like a flower and you want a little more shadow to it you can make a Gradient on the petals or the stem of the plant where the fills act as shadow through use of the appearance palette. You also do things such as adding highlights and texture to your creation. There are many objects and images that could benefit from the use of multiple fills to give it depth.
Question 01:
Low poly portraits are usually made of triangles because they give better control and precision, I’ve seen them even use the same process in video games. Triangles always stay flat, so when you mess with them can help keep the image looking sharp. If you use four-sided shapes instead, the design can get warped or uneven, especially when adjusting the shape or scaling it. Triangles are also easy to place next to each other to create a form like a puzzle.
Question 02:
Adding multiple fills to a shape can be useful because you can make an object look more detailed or layered. Designing clothing would benefit from this because you can add shadows, highlights, or even texture. Think about creating something like a jacket—you could have one fill for the base color, another for shadows, and a third for any fabric texture, making it look way more realistic without adding tons of extra shapes.
