    Question 01 –

Photoshop provides a flexible range of selection tools for your convenience. One is the Marquee tool, and you can get this with M. There are many different ranges of what the Marquee tool can do, but it is commonly used to select a wide area of an image. Second is the Magic Wand which is commonly used for selecting an entire certain color of an image. You would simply need to press W to get the tool, then click on the color of your image. This will select all of the same colors that you selected and mark it with “marching ants” indicating the selection just like how the Lasso/Marquee tool will indicate the shape of the selection.

    Question 02 –

To paint over the cut spots using the Brush tool, you would first need to get the tool using B. However, to make it so that the cut is seemingly covered well, I would suggest using the Eyedropper tool by pressing I first to get the color or colors surrounding the cut. This is because the default colors are always black and white just like in Adobe Illustrator; black being the FIRST default color that the brush uses. After, you can start using the Brush tool to go over the cut by clicking and dragging over it. This will paint over the spot your cursor was at with the color you have prepared beforehand.

The Eraser tool is another useful tool to use when trying to get rid of something. However, instead of using the usual color swatches that the Brush tool uses, it uses the background color. In essence, the Eraser tool is another brush tool, but it uses the background color to draw. For example, if the background color is transparent, then the Eraser tool will turn things transparent, giving the illusion that the image was “erased”. This means that whatever the background color is, the eraser will make the same color as it too! To use the Eraser tool to remove the cut spots, simply press E and then click and drag over the spots to erase into the background color.

    Question 1

The object selection tool selects everything within the area you highlight and will automatically adjust the selection based on the image outlines. The selection can be altered by holding the alt or option key to remove parts of the selection.

The marquee selection tool creates a circle that starts where your mouse is and extends outwards in a circle. Everything in that circle will become selected.

    Question 2-

The brush tool works just like a normal brush on a canvas if you paint on the layer above your image it will paint over it or specifically within your selection if you create one and paint on the same layer. The eraser can erase the things you create with the brush tool or erase things on your image if you erase on the same layer as your image as well. The brush tool can also be used to hide and add things from your image black paints transparency on the layer and white paints opacity.

    Question 01 –

Describe two different selection tools and how they work.

The two different selection tools are simple. First of all you have the regular selection that will simply select anything that you click on (as long as its in the same layer or the layer isn’t locked). If the object is grouped with other items, it will select all those items that are also grouped with in them. As for the other selection tool, the direct selection tool directly selects a single object no matter if it is in a group or not. You want to use this because sometimes you may have many shapes at once and selecting one can be a game changer.

    Question 02 –

How do you use the brush to paint over cut spots? How do you use the eraser to remove cut spots? What color does the brush paint with? What color does the eraser erase to?

Using the brush to paint over cut spots is pretty simple. All you want to do is select the brush tool, then simply change the color of that brush. Doing that ensures when you paint over whatever the cut spot may be, it will simply get rid of any cut spots you’ve had. As for using the eraser, you simply click on the eraser tool and it will simply erase anything that is there only leaving the BG layer (background). As for the color the paint brush paints with, it is simply all up to you and whatever color you pick for it. I believe for the paintbrush, the default color is white. As for the color of your eraser, it is simply the background color which is defaulted at white

    Question 01 –

Describe two different selection tools and how they work.

A common selection tool used by students in Photoshop is the magic wand tool. This tool selects areas of the project based on color, meaning if you click an area with a specific color, the magic wand tool will select the entire area consisting of the similar shade. You can adjust how sensitive it is to the shades by changing the tolerance. A higher tolerance will allow more to be selected while a lower tolerance will make it more sensitive and selective. Another selection tool used in Photoshop is the marquee tool. It allows us to select the desired area in a clear shape. There’s the rectangular and elliptical marquee tools which allow us to select these kinds of shapes more conveniently. Additionally, there are the single row and single column marquee tools, which allow us to select straight vertical or horizontal lines.

    Question 02 –

How do you use the brush to paint over cut spots? How do you use the eraser to remove cut spots? What color does the brush paint with? What color does the eraser erase to?

To use the brush tool, simply select the tool, pick your desired color through the foreground color picker, and click+drag over the areas you wish to be colored. The brush will paint with the set foreground color. Similarly, you can select the eraser tool, set the color it will erase to by changing the background color, and then click+drag across the desired area. The eraser tool will erase to the color of the set background color. For both the brush and the eraser tool, you can use the [ and ] keys to adjust the size ( [ for smaller strokes, ] for bigger strokes).

    Question 01 –

Describe two different selection tools and how they work.

Selection Tool Using the Selection Tool, you can select and edit a shape. By clicking on the shape, you can drag it to move, resize, or rotate it.

The Direct Selection Tool allows you to use anchor points. Clicking on a shape with the Direct Selection Tool enables you to fix or adjust the shape by selecting and moving individual anchor points.

    Question 02 –

How do you use the brush to paint over cut spots? How do you use the eraser to remove cut spots? What color does the brush paint with? What color does the eraser erase to?

Select the Brush Tool and choose the brush size. Paint over the cut spot with the selected color.

Select the Eraser Tool and erase the spots by clicking and dragging with the eraser tool. i think It erases to the background color.

      Hello Naglaa

You’ve summarized the erase tool steps way better than me. Thank you! it looks way more organized now.

    • Miguel

This is probably the best explanation of the eraser tool I’ve heard. Thank you for making this clear and straightforward

    Question 01 –

Describe two different selection tools and how they work.

Photoshop selection tools – the tools you can use to select a specific image or object within the photo during the editing process.

marquee tool – allows you to select an area of an image in the shape of either a rectangle, elliptical, or a single row and column. Rectangular marquee makes a rectangular or square selection. The elliptical marquee makes an elliptical or circle selection. Single Row or Single column marquee defines the border as a 1-pixel wide row or column. It is useful when you want clear and straight lines in your selection.

Object selection tool – allows you to roughly draw a lasso over an object and region of an image you want and it will automatically be selected. It is useful for making quick selections, cutting objects out, and starting a detailed mask. It works best when the object is clearly defined and has a good amount of contrast.

    Question 02 –

How do you use the brush to paint over cut spots? How do you use the eraser to remove cut spots? What color does the brush paint with? What color does the eraser erase to?

To use the brush tool in Photoshop to paint over cut spots, select the brush tool from the toolbar at the left and just click and drag over the cut spots to paint over them. To remove the cut spots, select the eraser tool from the toolbar and then click and drag the eraser over the cut spots to remove them. You are able to adjust the size and harding of the brush and eraser tool to your liking.

The color that the brush tool paints with is determined by the color you selected that is shown on the foreground color box. The color that the eraser tool erases with is the background color or the color that you selected as well.

    • Question 01

Describe two different selection tools and how they work.

    • Two Different Selection tools:
    1. Rectangle Marquee Tool: Which is the basic selection tool in Photoshop and it allows you to make rectangular selections. It works by selecting it and dragging it to create a rectangular selection in the area of the picture you wish to select. You can also adjust the size of the selection.
    2. Elliptical Marquee Tool: This tool helps to make oval selections. It can be accessed by holding the Rectangle Marquee Tool and it will give you more options, this tool will be there. By clicking on the starting point and holding the mouse, you can drag it until you get the desired selection. If you hold shift you can make a perfect circle selection from the center.
    • Question 02

How do you use the brush to paint over cut spots? How do you use the eraser to remove cut spots? What color does the brush paint with? What color does the eraser erase to?

    1. To use the brush to paint over cut spots, locate the Photoshop workspace, and select the “Brush Tool” from the toolbar or press “B” on your keyboard as a shortcut. Ensure the foreground color is set to white, as this will reveal the underlying layer when painting over cut spots on a mask. To set the foreground color to white, click on the foreground color box in the toolbar and select white from the color picker. Click on the small arrow next to the brush icon in the toolbar to access the brush settings. Here, you can adjust the size and hardness of the brush to suit your needs.
    2. To use the Eraser to delete over cut spots, access it by pressing the shortcut key “E” and position the Eraser tool over the cut spots you want to delete and click or drag over them to erase them from the image.
    3. The paint paints with the foreground color and the eraser erases with the background color.

Hey Auribel, I really like the way you explained how the different selection tools work and went over the brush and erase tool step by step which I appreciate it. I find it helpful and easy to understand.

    • Raesa

This is very well explained. Thank you for the detailed step-by-step explanation. I was confused about some of these tools myself, but this helped a lot!

    • Sandra

Your explanations are so clear! I like how you organized the information, it’s very helpful for quick references.

Question 01 – Describe two different selection tools and how they work.

Out of the different selection tools, I’ll explain the Magic Wand and Lasso tools! Firstly, to access these selection tools, you can use these shortcuts: Q for Lasso and Y for Magic Wand. Moving onto describing these two selection tools, the Lasso tool is used to draw around shapes/objects you’d like to select, you have to be sure you fully surround the object! This will allow you to move them around, cut and paste and overall manipulate the object. Lastly, the Magic Wand tool, this is just like the Lasso tool, except you CLICK the object you’d like to select/cut out to fully trace it rather than doing it point by point like you would with a normal Lasso tool. This may not always be accurate, but it is a great tool to use for simpler images!

Question 02 – How do you use the brush to paint over cut spots? How do you use the eraser to remove cut spots? What color does the brush paint with? What color does the eraser erase to?

Firstly, I’m not exactly sure what ‘cut spots’ refers to, so I am going to assume that it means an area that has been cut out or selected because the previous question asks about selection tools. Moving on, how do you use the brush to paint over cut spots? Well, once you have a selected area that you would like to paint over, you can use a function called “draw inside,” which is one of the drawing modes (you can switch between them using shift and D. In this case, you will be able to draw selectively inside of the selected object. For example, if you were to have a rectangle and a circle on the inside, but you only wanted to illustrate something within the circle, you would select the circle and then change the drawing mode to “draw inside,” then you can simply use the brush tool to draw something you would like in this cut area. As for erasing a cut spot, I would assume that we are erasing something within a selected area, in which case we can simply select the object/objects using the various selection tools that we would want to exclusively erase and then erase within that. Anything outside of the selected section will be ignored. The brush paints with the color that is selected under “stroke.” If you try to change the fill color and then use the brush to paint, then it’ll just paint the color that’s in strokes. The fill color is used for shapes and is the color that will be filled in once a shape is made. The stroke tool is for brushes and the outline of shapes. The eraser erases the color of the artboard, which just means the background color. Technically speaking it erases transparently as it’s deleting pixels. If you want to change the color of the artboard you can go to file, then document setup, and find the box that says simulate colored paper and change the color on top.

    • Raesa

I just realized this post was meant for photoshop so what I said here is partially incorrect, sorry about that!

    • riiiichord

This is a really detailed response! Despite using it so much in my digital art, I didn’t mention the Lasso tool. Thanks for the reminder, Raesa!
