  4. In the New York Times article entitled “Poverty in America is Mainstream”. By Mark R. Rank. November 2, 2013. He states that everyone must have encountered poverty at a certain point in life. Uncertain events like losing job and severe medical problems can also make one experience poverty in life. He also states that poverty is as a result of the failure of the government at economic and political level and the solution to poverty is quality education, having a well paid job and government support.

  7. This article states that the war on poverty is having very slow progress and that it is the fault of a changing labor market, and not the poor. Although this is the case, it is really helping make lives better for people. It says that programs like food stamps and the earned-income tax credit has caused a big decline in poverty, and that low income Americans are much healthier than they were in the 1960s.

  8. In Regards to chapter 4:

Kate Murphy gives us a very good example relating to the texts we read in class. Human kindness is an element of many different aspects of humanitarian life. Anything ranging from volunteering to empathizing with those in need, it is all critical in the school of civics. As such, the recent phenomenon mentioned in this article is an extraordinary example of a decent civics. Complete strangers are paying up front at drive-through’s for those behind them, in complete anonymity. This is a direct resultant of their civic understanding and appreciation; a random albeit universally agreed upon courtesy. It is necessary to coexist on a neighborly level with those around you, and through means such as this a community can persist and flourish. This can also be summed up as an attempt by people to improve each others lives on a very basic scale, simply because of all the issues with the world that they have to deal with on a day to day basis. Things like a lapse in government funding or Syrian uprisings trickle down, and have a big impact on the day to day life of the average American, regardless of how indistinct it may be. This is just a means for a society to cope with the hard times, and its heartwarming to see that complete strangers can come together in something as miniscule as simply putting a smile on each others faces.

  12. http://www.npr.org/2014/02/18/279216349/cbo-predicts-job-losses-from-minimum-wage-hike
In this article about minimum wage hikes, Audie Cornish, Scott Horsley and Gene Sperling discuss a report from the Congressional Budget Office (CBO). The report shows that if President Obama were to raise the federal minimum wage from $7.25 to $10.10 that it would raise 900,000 people out of poverty, but at the cost of upwards of 500,000 jobs. CBO shows that by late 2016 when the increase was fully implemented, 25 million people would see an increase in their paychecks, which could stimulate the economy. However, many people may lose their job or not be able to find one with the higher demand, as well as the large loss in jobs. According to Gene Sperling, there’s a lot of imprecision in CBO’s estimates, but CBO claims it’s due to the 39% increase that even in doses would worry employers. They also show a comparison by showing a CBO estimate that when increased to $9.00 as Obama proposed, an estimated 300,000 people would be brought out of poverty instead of 900,000, and only enduring approximately 100,000 lost jobs as opposed to 500,000. There was also discussion of the possibility of increasing wage relative to inflation rates, automatically adjusting wages as a result, but that could either make employers more inclined to fire employees knowing they would have to raise their pay annually, or possibly lower the loss of jobs because employers had a greater ability to make predictions.

  13. In the article “Poverty in America is Mainstream” by Mark R. Rank, published on November 2, 2013, the author states that the notion of poverty affects almost a small number of Americans. He explains the characteristics of poverty as the result of lack of motivation and not working hard enough. In addition to that, he states some events like losing a job, experiencing a family problem or serious medical problem can probably throw people into poverty.

  14. According to Peter Edelman, one of the main reasons why some people in America are still living in poverty is due to the fact that a majority of them work at jobs that pay a low-wage. Also, many households in America are led by single parents who struggle to support their family, due to having a low-wage job. The article “Poverty In America: Why Can’t End It” states that the poverty rate has climbed immensely since the year 2000. One of the ways we could help people get out of poverty would definitely be by providing more decent paying jobs.

  15. Judge Rejects New York’s Stop-and-Frisk Policy

The judge didn’t agree with the fact that the majority of the people getting stopped were minority men because the NYPD feel that they were the “right people to stop “. 20. THE UNITED STATES, FALLING BEHIND.
    By: The Editorial Board

The Editorial Board of the NY Times states that the United States’ rank amongst its economic competitors is dropping because of our education system. Our system pays attention to graduation rates rather than actually learning. With the lack of education our students are receiving today, we are not getting the required skills for the future jobs that will be created in the years to come. Studies have shown that Americans are “comparatively weak” in problem solving, numeracy, and literacy in comparison to 24 other countries. The country will be facing serious economic issues in the future if education isn’t taken seriously over the upcoming years.

  22. This artical is about war. Ibelieve that war is a big topic because war affects people family and cause many life to be taken. America is possibly going to go in to war with Syria and this will cause another disaster in wich many citizens are dying on a daily basis. Just like it was wen citizens fought in Iraq.I believe sometimes problems can be solved without war.
