How would you describe the sense of place when walking through 19thcentury New York City neighborhoods? What qualities are particularly notable?

Walking through the New York City 19th century, you could see that more than one architectural style were predominant in the city. I believe this represent how different countries architecture are used to be combined into one to give an unique identification to the city.

In this trip, I observed that most of the 19th centuries housesĀ Ā  attraction is the doors entrances design known as portico. I was surprised to see how the main aesthetic of the houses was the ā€œpiano nobileā€ (the noble floor) main entrance, the facade was very simple and traditional. The developers of high statues buy four lots of properties together to build houses with similar pattern and same architecture style.Ā  A vivid example are the few reddish houses facing the Washington square park has ionic columns and they are made of bricks and stucco; the portico is painted all black and the windows and doors are same height very monumental. Ā These houses are Greek revival. The material used on these houses exterior decorations design was iron.

Through this trip, I notice that most of the houses in Green villages are made of brick and stucco materials.Ā  The exterior design and the capital are very simple. The Greenwich village feels like been in a different country. I felt very connected with the Italian age architecture been used in this village such as, I feel like if I was walking in Italy because of the exterior design.

When I walked to the Sheridan square street, I see how particular this street is because of the diagonal street open spaces. It intrigued me the strategies used by developers from the 19th to put these streets together into one functional place for the people regardless the fact that this street wasnā€™t built with a specific structural grid.

I determined that several places in New York are completely different; the places we visited in this trip truly perform how downtown Manhattan used to look during the 19th centuries. There was mostly houses and few skyscrapers. The buildings were builtĀ  with the most common material used during that time which wasĀ  brick, stucco, stone etc. The existing buildings and houses show what architectural styles movements were in fashion back in the 19th century.

How would you describe the sense of place when walking through 19th century New York City neighborhoods? What qualities are particularly notable?

Visiting Washington Square Park and Greenwich village through SoHo, I realize the difference between the early 1900s architecture style and the new architectural style. The difference is huge the ambient is different from the city, while I was walking through the place, I felt that I was in a different era from the 1900s because of the way the buildings are designed and built, the variety of colors and similarities of the buildings with stairs at the front and more importantly lower levels buildings. Ā I was amazed by the view this place has to offer.

At the entrance of Washington Square Park, the first noticeable thing is the Washington arch and the large fountain at the center which are the two main attractions of this place. People from different parts of the city come to this place to take pictures and film videos or do shows at the arch and enjoy the view. Buildings surrounded by the park conserve the Greek style and Italian style of the 1900s with a massive cast-iron structure that gives a unique design to the buildings. Also, as I walked to SoHo, I notice that the streets were smaller closer to each other and not straight making them difficult to walk.

Greenwich village reflects and represents the old architecture style, for example, lower levels of buildings, big entrances and doors, big streets with a unique style and architectural details at the front of each building.Ā  This place has historic buildings from the 1900s where visitors can experience and feel how it was at that time and gives a sense of how people lived in the past.

How does the design of the park impact visitors? What features of the park are particularly notable? Describe these features and why you are intrigued by them.

With the rapid industrialization and progressive improvements of New York in the 1800s, society pushes for a plan to create landscape spaces, walking paths that connect different sides of the city, and more importantly a place where people can enjoy.

In 1850 a movement start to take place to create a park that will allow to connect different parts of the city between east, west, south and north, to create more open spaces with better air condition, a playground where kids and people can enjoy and relax. In 1855 this project was approved by the state, Frederick Law Olmsted and Calvert Vaux project were selected out of others’ designs to create a park that will mainly know past to be a masterpiece of landscape architecture nowadays.

Central Park design varies in different architectural styles such as English style and gothic style among others. At the entrance and sides of the park, we can see directly to the inside of the park which is not covered by big walls or arcs around it. Nature is one of the features that bring life to the park among the city skyscrapers. Lakes at this park is one of the features that this park brings to visitors to view and relax. Another feature is the roads of this park allowing to connect different sides and neighborhoods of the city. With the construction of this park, it increases the cost of land where rich people only can afford.

In a city filled with tall buildings, central park gave a different feeling to people where they can disconnect from the city and enjoy the nature that the park brings. Central Park connects neighborhoods around the city creating an open society where people can interact with each other and kids can enjoy and play.

How does the design of the park impact visitors? What features of the park are particularly notable? Describe this features and why you are impacted by them?

The Central Park in New York City is one of the most famous parks in the history because of its beauty and authentically connections with the city.

In 1857, the Greensward plan by Frederick Law Olmsted won the competition given to find the specific candidates to build the first central park. The landowners and merchants were inspired by the England styles of their soft and natural landscapes looks. It was designed with the purpose of creating a pastoral landscape inspired in the romanticism era. This park was meant to have picturesque features. The mainly goal of the designers were to build the ideal park for the citizens and immigrants families inhabiting the New York City.

It impacted me that the park layouts orientation is very precise to emphasize the visitorā€™s access to their spaces of interest. It has multi functions for the people with different classes of status to be public for them. When the designers built the central park in NYC, they assure that there will be areas for the kids and adults.Ā  By the 19th century they started to build playground in Central park for the kids. There is the Victorian Gardens amusement park in central park which was established in 2003. The adults and families have the accessibility to landscapes to gather and enjoy the park and to have fun in it. For instance, Central park has different paths like for pedestrians to walk, to ride bicycles, to ride horsesā€™ coaches. People can paddle in boats in those Ā Ā non-natural rivers that were created to give a more tropical look to this park.

By walking through central park, you can have good views and observe some beautiful skyscrapers and ended up being amazed by the beauty and the natural look that the designers accomplishes for this park. Being in central park feels like walking through a different world.

Week 4 – Central Park

The execution of Central Park is considered a green gem. Personally, I feel that NYC would lose its identity without this 840 acre park. A park that re directs you into its own world. I should start by saying the construction of the BelvedereĀ  Castle in the park is remarkable. The castle serves as an observation point. You’re able to view the East side of the park and enjoy the pond in front of it. The small castle transports you to a royal feeling. It gives a sense of fiction and fairy tale and what other better way than to provide an escape from the hustle and bustle the city has to offer.

The park also had exotic animals before Robert Moses came and created the zoo layout we all know today. But I find this a rather interesting action. A park in the middle of city allows exposes visitors to exotic animals. This is another example of feeling away from the city. People are meant to focus on the animals present and forget where they’re at and that’s the whole purpose Frederick Law Olmstead and designer Calvert Vaux envisioned when executing the park.

The parks landscape welcomes its guests its almost as if the landscape subconsciously speaks to us.Ā  Many people gather around and just enjoy being able to sit, run or picnic in a large green open space such as Sheep Meadow. Also as they connect with the environment by the strawberry fields. When you surpass an entry point you’re able to see a long row of benches curving with the walkway. This effect allows the chairs to communicate with us almost as if we could feel battling each other for you attention. Providing plenty of space to sit comfortably.Ā  The park has it’s ingenious moments where it provides venture, almost as if you were going from one world to another such as tunnels and archways blended in with landscape. Central Park has so much to offer and so much to describe.

Though, my best words to summarize it would be living in a fairytale and a place that’s poetic and resonates with the heart and it’s emotions.
