In reading 1&2 I have learned how you can’t compare architecture into construction. I also learned about building systems and the system of order from reading #1. I read about different types of stones and how they are used to construct building. From reading #2 I learned about how important it is to have egress in your building for emergency. Also learned the different styles of stairs and how to draw it and section drawing of stairs as well.
What I’ve learned so far in both reading #1 and #2 is the importance to have the basic requirements of a successful building. I’ve learned that we should consider some concepts such as scale, proportion, space, light, to make a building as a whole. I’ve also learned the life safety code which should become the first thing we should have in mind when designing a building. Overall the class given today was very successful and helpful. Professor Montgomery demonstrated how to draw stairs plan and the importance of measurements of the stairs (7-eleven).
Reflection #2
Some of the things that I had learned in my previous reading, because of me seeing construction as Architecture that was the wrong perspective. An architect has a job to do at the end of the day and therefore the more architecture is changing so have the architects you can no longer have a practical approach, but instead have conceptual approach to everything and achieve what you are suppose to do as an architect. Finally the interpretation you as a architect give to a site is obvious too your style. Or not so obvious, but with a certain goal achieved.
After reading #1 I learned that architecture is more than just the design of a structure, what I mean by that is there are many concept and details to make structures. For instence the way I view Architecture before was that the most important thing in a structure was creation a beautiful shell that everyone can see and admire, but reading #1 showed me that there is a system that comes with that and that really open my mind on how Architecture is more than a beautiful design. the understanding that the skeleton of the structure is as important as the shell is. As well that it is very important what materials we use on the structured its what is the site as well. I believe that after reading a text we learn by reviewing it, and highlighting important things would be useful but after taking in consideration what Prof. Montgomery showed us in class I can say that the system that he has is very effective to capture and learn information better. from concept maps that lets us know what information is more important and what are supporting details that can support that , to analyzing the information and asking questions on the text you are reading.
Because their is so many different aspects to fall into. After the first reading you can tell how Architecture and Construction can be put in the same job, but not the workspace when you hear construction you hear “shelter” or almost even “habitat”. However in architecture you hear words like “space”, because space falls into different categories you can see their is different materials and super structures and sub structures that can provide different space. With that you are left to choose and check which materials adapt in different environments and how that environment adapts it’s laws to the construction then eventually effects the architect. Therefore the more you see technology evolve it is only right that construction follows. Finally technology can evolve, but is the environment construction builds on able to keep up.
Generally, I know I learned after reading is by when I can explain it to someone so that they understood it. Also using the information I learned and apply it in real life.
The things I will need to do to ensure I have learned the most important concepts in the reading are by engage with what I read, don’t speed read and apply what i read.
After reading #1 I perceived Architectural differently by seeing how architecture is more then construction. You can not call a building architecture just because you know how to construct a building. Architectural is more of design and creativity. Architectural is the art and science of designing building.
