COMD 1123 – Foundation Drawing

An introductory course designed to explore the basic tools, techniques and principles of drawing. The course also covers projection systems, plans, elevations, sections, oblique, isometric, one point perspective and two point perspective views. Students learn to further render forms and texture through analysis of light and shadow and by utilizing the 5-value system.

Learning Outcomes

Through hands-on experiments, collaborative learning, and individual projects, students will demonstrate:

  • Lifelong Learning: The student will demonstrate an awareness of resources for continued lifelong learning.
  • Think Critically: The student will demonstrate the ability to evaluate evidence and apply reasoning to make valid inferences.
  • Reflective Engagement: The student will demonstrate an ability to reflect on and synthesize course concepts and terminology in self and peer-to-peer critiques:
    • Students will be able to explain both verbally and in writing vocabulary and concepts related to drawing.
    • Students will understand and apply basic drawing concepts of Contour, Value and Compositional concepts such as Contrast, Negative Space, Balance, and Focal Point.
    • Students will understand and utilize measuring tools and relative proportion when rendering the picture plane.
    • Students will create drawings of and explain verbally and in written form concepts of one and two point linear perspective.
    • Students will create simple straight-edge and rounded objects in one and two-point perspective
    • Students will create complex objects in two-point perspective.
    • Students will create complex spaces using one and two-point perspective.
    • Students will be able to depict simple objects using the 7-value system.

Grades will be based upon:

  • Individual Assignments 40%
  • In-Class and online participation i.e. discussions, critiques 15%
  • Quizzes and Tests 10%
  • Final Project 15%
  • Final in-class drawing exam: 10%
  • Sketchbooks 5%
  • Uploading student work to class site 5%
  • Total 100%

Class Etiquette & Netiquette

Learning is a group activity. The behavior of each person in class affects the overall learning environment. As a COMD student you are expected to act in a professional manner; to be respectful of the learning process, your instructor, and your fellow students. And hopefully have fun!

Attendance

Attendance is taken and is important to success in this class. Both absences and arrival more than 15 minutes after the start of class will be marked. If excessive, the instructor will alert the student that they may be in danger of not meeting the course objectives and participation expectations, which could lead to a lower or failing grade.

Make-ups / Late Submission

  • Homework is due ON TIME, and will receive a reduced grade if late.
  • Homework must be posted on OpenLab by XXXX [state day and time] before the class session. 
  • All homework assignments are listed online on class site.
  • Absence is NO excuse for late homework! 
  • Homework can be revised for a possible grade change, although late homework always maintains a reduced grade due the original lateness.
