Some important factors when shooting a portrait is the lighting your taking the photo in, the angle in which the camera is in, how much or how little the person is in the shot and the positioning of the person. The difference between broad and short lighting is that broad lighting is when you have the broadness of the face or the light the hits most of the face with the shadow on half of the face and having a visible ear and short lighting is when you have the most shadows on the face. The main light is the light that is mostly being used to brighten up the picture it is also used to cast the main shadows. The fill light adds extra light to the picture by reflecting it off of something. The background light is the light that comes off the background. What I didn’t understand in class today is how each different lighting portrays a different mood.
This photo is in focus, has a dramatic shadow to it and was taken from a side view.
If the subject’s face is seen in a 3/4 view, then short light is when the light falls on the side of the face with the features.
The fill light, which can be a reflector or a light, brightens the shadows.
Hopefully, after today’s class the way mood is conveyed is clearer.
