The photograph I choice is by, Eugene Richards, and its called, “Through a dusty window”. It was taken by, Richard, in New York, NY in 2001. During the collapse of the World Trade Center. The intention of the photograph was to express how shocking that moment was to the people of New York. The women’s face expression shows pure horror, and very shocked emotions. In her face, you can also see that she is slightly confused. One can say, that she knows something bad has happened but just doesn’t fully understand the event yet. The mood in this photograph seems dark, sad, and very emotional. The women’s face makes the photo dramatic, and the monochromatic setting makes it dark and mysterious. Together they make a good horror scene.
This photograph uses formal elements such as, the rules of third, Frame within a frame, and Center Dominant Eye. The women is nicely place to the right side of the rules of third. This creates nice movement through the photo. For example, this allows you to explore the photo, without being compromised to look only at the women. If she was placed in the middle, it would force the viewer to look at her only, making it less comfortable to explore the picture. As the main subject of the photo, she is placed in a great position. The Frame within a frame, creates a great indoor theme. It creates a sense of protection, and shelter. For instance, the window makes it feel as if they are being protected by what is happening at that moment. The photo also uses the Center dominant eye element, placing the man’s eye right at the center of the photo. This is great, because it gives the photo more character and interested. For this photo, its a great element to use, because the visual aspect of this photo is the most dramatic thing happening at that moment. Placing the guys eye in the middle of the photo, creates a strong sense of importance on it.
Overall, this photograph uses the elements very strongly. I really enjoy this picture, because it beautifully captures the true horror of that moment for the people in, New York.
