COMD Com­mu­ni­ca­tion De­sign In­tern­ship Co­or­di­na­tion Site

This site is de­signed to help you find field­work/study sit­u­a­tions of ap­prox­i­mately eight hours per week at an in­tern­ship site ap­proved by the De­part­ment In­tern­ship in­struc­tor such as an ad­ver­tis­ing agency, graphic de­sign firm, cor­po­rate de­sign of­fice, pub­li­ca­tions art de­part­ment, pho­tog­ra­phy or il­lus­tra­tion stu­dio, TV or mul­ti­me­dia pro­duc­tion com­pany. Stu­dents will be re­quired to keep a learn­ing jour­nal of their in­tern­ship in the form of a blog using Open­lab. A por­tion of the class will be de­voted to pre­sent­ing and shar­ing ex­pe­ri­ences with class­mates. Stu­dents will learn how to as­sess their tal­ents, up­date their re­sume, and pro­mote them­selves and their work through so­cial net­works. Stu­dents will be re­quired to setup and main­tain at least two so­cial media net­works such as: Face­book, LinkedIn, Twit­ter, In­sta­gram, and Pin­ter­est. The in­struc­tors for this class are there as men­tors if you have not yet found an in­tern­ship be­fore reg­is­ter­ing for the course. How­ever, the in­struc­tors do not find an in­tern­ship place­ment for you. It is your re­spon­si­bil­ity to find a po­si­tion that fits your per­sonal ca­reer path and help you tran­si­tion to full time em­ploy­ment upon leav­ing the halls of CityTech. Ide­ally, you will use this site to find an in­tern­ship the se­mes­ter be­fore tak­ing the COMD 4900 class.

This course will ex­plore the foun­da­tional con­cepts of light and ex­po­sure in pho­tog­ra­phy. Stu­dents will de­velop vi­sual lit­er­acy as well as fram­ing and com­po­si­tional skills. Stu­dents will be­come ac­quainted with a wide range of con­tem­po­rary pho­tog­ra­phers and gain an un­der­stand­ing of how pho­to­graphic style trans­forms sub­ject mat­ter into mean­ing. Using pro­fes­sional light­ing equip­ment and cam­eras, the stu­dent will gain hands-on ex­pe­ri­ence cap­tur­ing dig­i­tal im­ages in the stu­dio as well as on lo­ca­tion. Stu­dents will also learn pro­fes­sional meth­ods and soft­ware to man­age, process and print dig­i­tal im­ages.

COMD 4801 | The Port­fo­lio

De­vel­op­ment of each stu­dent’s strat­egy for en­ter­ing the de­sign pro­fes­sion. Cu­mu­la­tive work will be cri­tiqued by fac­ulty and pro­fes­sional ad­vis­ers. Stu­dents edit and re ne their port­fo­lios to meet pro­fes­sional stan­dards and will add ma­te­ri­als as needed. The de­vel­op­ment of in­di­vid­ual pro­mo­tional pieces, re­sume writ­ing, job search and in­ter­view­ing skills will be em­pha­sized.

COMD 3501 OL26 IDEN­TITY DE­SIGN FA2020

Stu­dents will de­velop a ro­bust and uni­fied vi­sual iden­tity for a cul­tural in­sti­tu­tion in­clud­ing a logo, brochure and ad cam­paign. We will ex­plore the el­e­ments that make an iden­tity ap­pro­pri­ate, en­gag­ing and co­he­sive. Color palette, iconog­ra­phy and type se­lec­tion will be dis­cussed. Slide lec­tures, as­signed read­ings, videos and class cri­tiques will aug­ment the de­sign process. The final pro­ject will be pre­sented in the form of a pdf book­let and will in­clude ev­i­dence of process as well as ap­pli­ca­tions. Process will con­sist of re­search, mind map­ping and logo de­vel­op­ment sketches. Guide­lines for logo usage will be de­vel­oped.

COMD3633, Ad­vanced Strate­gies in Il­lus­tra­tion, SP20

This course is de­signed to pre­pare the stu­dent for entry into the pro­fes­sional world of il­lus­tra­tion. De­vel­op­ment of a port­fo­lio demon­strat­ing a high level of skill and a per­sonal style, as well as the abil­ity to dis­cuss the work in for­mal and con­cep­tual terms is the pri­mary focus. Ad­di­tion­ally, the stu­dent will be in­tro­duced to a va­ri­ety of pro­fes­sional prac­tices and de­velop a fa­mil­iar­ity with the local, re­gional and na­tional scenes. The port­fo­lio con­tents should demon­strate the stu­dent’s ver­sa­til­ity and ad­vanced skills while demon­strat­ing con­sis­tency in pre­sen­ta­tion.
