DesirĂ©e Alvarez is a painter and poet who has received numerous awards including a European Capital of Culture Award, three New York Foundation for the Arts Artist Fellowship Awards, the American Academy of Arts and Letters Willard L. Metcalf Award and the 2016 May Sarton New Hampshire Poetry Prize. She exhibits widely, with frequent exhibitions of her work at International Print Center New York in Chelsea and Central Booking Gallery in Brooklyn. Alvarez has been awarded fellowships from P.S. 122 and Yaddo and has won awards for her poetry and non-fiction with work appearing in The Iowa Review, Poetry Magazine, Boston Review, Denver Quarterly, Prairie Schooner and Black Renaissance Noire. She received a Workspace residency fellowship from Lower Manhattan Cultural Council in 2014, a Poets House Fellowship in 2012, the Glenna Luschei Award from Prairie Schooner in 2012, and was nominated for a Pushcart Prize. Her first book of poems, Devil’s Paintbrush, received the May Sarton New Hampshire Poetry Book Award and was published by Bauhan Publishing in 2016. Her poetry is anthologized in The Traveler’s Vade Mecum published by Red Hen Press in 2016.

This hands-on mixed media course explores the basic principles of design and develops fluency in the visual lexicon. We explore two-dimensional design and color theory and graphic communication through the understanding of the elements and principles of design, as well as the design process, including idea development through final execution. We will develop fundamental skills in two-dimensional design, color and content creation while employing the design process of research, sketching and experimentation.
