In paragraph 10 Malcolm describes the reason behind his love for reading by saying “Between Mr. Muhammad’s teachings, my correspondence, my visitors–usually Ella and Reginald–and my reading of books, months passed without my even thinking about being imprisoned. In fact, up to then, I never had been so truly free in my life.” Despite having no freedom due to the color of his skin and for literally being behind bars, Malcolm felt a sense of freedom that reading has led him to feel. Same with Douglass, he also became much more aware of his mistreatment from other famous writers and grew a motivation to fight for his human rights.
He continued to pursue “.. being able to read and understand.” notice how he doesn’t say read and write ,but to read and understand. He didn’t want to just be able to say the words, he wanted become knowledgeable on every topic to where he can teach it to someone else. Also throughout this reading he mentions multiple time how his “alma mater” was “books” he does this just to contradict the set social standard that you must go to school to be smart or have an education. He proved otherwise by being a very influential leader with famous writings and speeches we all study, yet he got HIS education within prison walls, access to books, and a strong motivation to understand.
Good.
Liked: . . . he mentions multiple time how his “alma mater” was “books” [need period to fix this RO Run-On] he does this just to contradict the set social standard that you must go to school to be smart or have an education.
