Rhetorical Analysis and Quotables- Brianna L.

Rhetorical Analysis:

In the Article “Schools are killing curiosity: Why we need to stop telling children to shut up and learn”, Berliner addresses how she feels in terms of kids and their academics. This type of article is informative or opinionative because Berliner describes her point of view and how she feels in terms of teachers denying answering questions from children as well as informing others of researchers and their claims. Berliner addressed how a researcher claimed that children work better academically when they are curious. The author’s tone is critical because this to her and many others is a serious matter because of how much it can affect children and their future knowing that they have questions that are unanswered. In this case, the intended audience for this article are teachers, parents, & people that work in the school as well. This is being addressed to many because they want to normalize curiosity and help children understand the real world. The message that Berliner wants to leave to the audience is for people to be mindful that children are children and there should be changes in terms of “school policies” that indicate that you can’t ask questions out of curiosity unless it has to do with what you are learning. Things like this still occur till this day but aren’t usually spoken about. Today, children suffer with technology because of curiosity. Nowadays children go straight to devices to gather information. This source is very reliable because it is a way to help develop a better school system for children to make them feel more comfortable in the environment. This article was made more than four years ago which means that the accuracy of this still happening probably changed drastically but doesn’t mean it still doesn’t happen at all.

Notable Quotes:

  1. here is example of good rhet analysis: Look at how straight and to the point the writing is. USE the guiding questions in the Assignment. PRINT IT OUT. (on the Assignment page). STUDY THE WHOLE ASSIGNMENT. THere are guiding questions to write all the four parts of a source entry!

The genre is a feature piece. The primary audience is teachers and parents of young children; the secondary audience is the general reading public. The purpose is to inform. The author’s writing style is objective and factual. She employs a logical tone. Berliner uses the appeal of logos by referring to research studies. Berliner is credible because she is the author of the book “How to Succeed at School. What Every Parent Should Know.” She uses the appeal of ethos when she writes that she is co-author of this book. She also employs pathos in the story of the innovative pre-school classroom where kids played with household “toys.” The classroom felt so ideal and fun. The Guardian is a reliable source because they were rated the most trustworthy online UK newspaper brand – ranked as such by 73% of regular readers. The Guardian’s values include encouraging a welcoming and open culture, standing up for what they think is right rather than what seems convenient, and aiming for perfection to serve their audience’s interests. This article was written in Jan 2020, so the information might not be current, but it is not too old.
