It was November 11, 2020, and a teenage boy was hunched over his laptop on a desk in the corner of a room. With the now-forgotten garbled words emanating from the high school Zoom call in the background, I worked away in Roblox Studio, a coding and modeling workspace that comes complimentary to Roblox. I had just uploaded my first Starscape-inspired spaceship build to the Starscape Discord. People offered their compliments to my first venture into the 3D modeling world.
âMaybe my work would eventually be noticed by the game developers and I could join Starscapeâs game development team!â
Overzealous and overconfident, I immediately began work on my second creation for the next few hours. After completing and posting it online, it only took a few minutes for a server moderator to post an incensive comment:
âDandy (a game developer) is gonna have a fucking stroke when he comes back.â
The next message after that was:
âDear god.â
As more comments, criticisms, and emoji reactions gushed in through the discussion channel, I felt like I had been hung by my feet over a fire, the laughing stock among the better modelers. I donât remember if I cried, but I did not touch Roblox Studio for about a week. Perhaps that was valuable reflecting time. I donât know what changed, but when I returned, I felt I could prove to the poor souls who had seen my monstrosity that I could do better. And âdo betterâ I did.
Good job!
I like the title for this scene.
A couple of points.
Need to make clear: How will the reader know that the teenager in the first sentence and the “I” in the second sentence are the same person?
With these as the ending sentence (for this opening scene, I assume this is your opening scene): I donât know what changed, but when I returned, I felt I could prove to the poor souls who had seen my monstrosity that I could do better. And âdo betterâ I did. — What are the next events (you did the outline, yes?) that will show your process of sharpening and advancing your game modeling skills?
I am expecting that your narrative will move on to show me the transformation from novice “modeler” to more skilled modeler and how you accomplished this change. Yes?
