Professional Advocacy Project

For my professional advocacy project, I attended the March For Babies walk on April 29, 2018. The 3-mile walk began at 10 am on Columbus Avenue between 65th street and 62nd street in Manhattan. A lot of individuals attended the walk, many of whom were walking for babies that were born sick or prematurely. Families came together to fight for the health of mothers and babies. There was an informational booth, a marching band, and many individuals were carrying posters and banners. The walk came to an end on Lexington Ave and 26th street.

According to March for Babies (2018), “about a half of million babies are born premature or with birth defects in the U.S. each year”. The March for Babies walk is held to raise funds and awareness about the health of mothers and babies. The money raised is used to increase the number of programs and services offered in order to ensure that mothers and babies receive the best care. The money is also used for research in order to find solutions to birth defects and infant mortality. A total of $1,232, 387 was raised meeting 82 percent of the goal.

As an individual who participated in the walk we advocated for healthier pregnancies, and better healthcare services for mothers and babies. As nurses, it is important to advocate for the health of mothers and babies. Mothers should be supported through every stage of their pregnancy. It is essential that mothers have access to healthcare services in order to receive the proper education and assistance required to have a healthy pregnancy. Overall, it was nice to see the community come together to support a wonderful cause.
