Drafting

Think about how you approach writing assignments and write a paragraph describing this approach; for example, do you write several drafts? wait until the last minute? proofread carefully? Give honest details! Then, add what you would like to change or improve about your writing process.

    ———Work in process ————

During the summer of 2008, I was in my second or third year of college. After our finals, friends with similar ideas and views on life decided to go on a backpacking trip to the mountains. Whenever I think back to that trip, I can almost hear the meditative sound of the train we took.  I remember how hot it was in the cabin, and we couldn’t wait to reach our destination and the sweet scent of wildflowers and thyme in the air. The railway road wound around meadows and mountain rivers, and we eagerly stuck our hands and heads out the windows to catch this smell first, as if there might not be enough for everyone. Who we are? A bunch of slackers, bookworms, believers, cinephiles, hippies, and nerds. Students thirsty for life knowledge and adventure are looking for meaning and acceptance.  I felt happy feeling the wind in my, then, long hair.

Sashko, my good friend, was sitting on bench and reading something. He is one of “those”- smart and kind, wise, with a great sense of humor. Deep and funny, something slow on reaction, but sharp with words. Funny thing, I barely can remember his face, i just know that he is beautiful inside and out. He was a couple years older, but the whole life wiser. He is one of those you treasure for the rest of your life. The kindness and the dark humor comes naturally from him. Oh boy he was well-read, and he wasn’t just into fiction or non-fiction. Sashko is an omnivorous when it comes to information. He had subscription of National Geographic delivered to his dorm door, librarian held new books for him, he had a friend or he ‘knew” a person in all book stores in town. He wasn’t a stranger to newspapers and fashion magazines.

I was sitting across from him, sipping tea from this cool old school rail road cups aka glass in a metal holder with ivy patters. Looking trough the window…

…. thinking my heavy, unpleasant thoughts.

He knew what was bothering me.

    —————————

Sashko said: “Hey, listen to it.” He looked at the page and read aloud: “You can expand your knowledge only when you look directly into the eyes of your ignorance.” He smiled and added: “You will see; you will be fine. Just take your time and think about it; you’ll know what to do and why to do so”. I did think then and still do.

But at first I was angry at him, that’s was the last thing i would want to hear, especially from a friend.

I graduated from university, and my bachelor’s paper was graded at the highest score in my class. And I apply this quote to education and other aspects of life. Whatever feels wrong or “unpleasant,” that’s where I go. To face and solve it, talk about it, and lift that “heavy mountain” off your shoulders.

My writing approach can be very rushed. To be completely honest, I normally wait until the last minute to do an essay so there isn’t enough time to write drafts. However, I do list bullet points on topics that I would like to speak about during my essay. I also noticed that my writing process is significantly easier when I have like guiding questions to start a topic. I proof read my work for grammatical errors and mistakes multiple times before I ever submit an assignment. Moving forward, I would like to try to start my assignments earlier so I can have feedback to work from.

My writing style is in between, I do wait until I feel like I’ve come up with a good writing break before I ever dedicate a period of time to that particular piece. Though this takes time I have come up with great stories and writing pieces. The downside to this , which is also what I need to improve on is finding a way to quicken this process for myself. Finding out what brings out the real writer in me instead of waiting so I can get feedback or have time to re-write after a proper thought process and refresh. ( Piggy Backed @Madison)

I tend to become quite slow-footed when it comes to the topic of writing assignments, especially when it comes to personal written assignments. Even when it comes down to such a menial task as this one; I still can’t discern what to scribe on my paper. Well, it would be a computer for this particular matter, but the point still stands. I’m always critical about my work and have low expectations as a result. Even now I’m glancing back what I’ve wrote and making minor tweaks along the way. Although this isn’t my most unyielding battle; personal assignments are where I fall short. It’s a closed book on how others seem to write them so easily. It’s almost if they had their whole life’s story waiting on this moment to be put on paper, but when it comes to me I’d probably go on the likes of, “so, yeah. I think I might of seen a cloud today.”

The way that i approach writing assignments is simply first mentally noting any points or details that i would want to include within a writing peice, type/write out a rough draft of what i would like to convey or write while making corrections or changes as i go, this will either 1. serve as a first draft, or 2. serve as the final producut. If case 1 is the cause, then i will choose to rewrite anything i wrote down in order to form a better writing peice, if times permits. However, if case 2 is the cause then i will skimly proofread my writing peice instead of rewriting my draft.

The things that i would love to reflect upon and improve would be my drafting to writing process. As my drafting process is essnetially a rough draft of my thoughts, i feel as theres always room for improvement when it comes to process of taking said draft and turning it into a final product.

The way i write is just going with it. If i think too much about it i get off topic. I like to start something off strong, give backstory, and a great ending

My process is writing several drafts on different docs. Each draft includes a specific moment and in the end I put everything together when I’m done.

For my approach to writing assignments, for some, I write several drafts especially when the topic is hard for me to do. But most of the time I wait last minute and don’t do any drafts at all. I do look for examples online to see and predict what I want my assignment to look like. I always proofread my work. I check for grammar errors and misspelled words but somehow I always don’t see my mistakes even when a word is spelled wrong. My brain just does not process it. What I would like to improve about my writing process is doing drafts more often and getting better at proofreading my work.

The way that I write these drafts is to feel as though I am writing the final piece of my work and as I continue to check it see what could change. I believe that if you write a draft as it is you might not create a great final draft. So as I create my draft I try to write as if it was my final and then see what I can change to make it better.

For my approach of writing assignments, I alway begin by thinking in what I want to do but I don’t use to write any drafts. I’m very indecisive so I spend hours even day just thinking in the topic. And the time in which I sit down on my desk is when I begin writing. I like to write more than one draft of every paragraph it helps me to see different perspectives. But i almost always lead everyone to the end of the assignment. I think that I need to work on my procrastination and decide more faster a topic to begin working on it right away.

I always wait until the last moments to do my drafts, I sometimes don’t even do them and just go for the final thing. I always do proofread at the end of my writing though. Which is why I take the longest in my last part. Something I’d like to change is the way I don’t do first drafts.

I don’t like to leave things to the last minute so I start preparing for my writing assignment well in advance. I first think well about the topic, brainstorm for ideas about how I can develop it, and then the important part is that I begin doing research looking for sources that I can use if it is necessary to use them. I look for books and articles through websites like Google Scholar and the university website since I know the sources I get from there are reputable. I then see what the authors write about the topic and that gives me the ideas and basis for the assignment. Afterwards I make an outline that includes all the different sections of what I want to say to make sure they follow a logical order and also showing the sources I want to use. I then begin writing based on this. Once I have a first draft I like getting someone else to read it to make sure I didn’t make big mistakes. I try to read the draft a few times to make sure I didn’t miss something, and then I feel comfortable submitting it.
