Genre Scavenger Hunt, part 2

  • Using one of the examples you found as a “mentor text” for your own Unit 3 project, analyze the example in detail:
    • Are the paragraphs long or short? How long is the overall piece?
    • Is imagery used?
    • From what point of view is the piece written?
    • Is there dialogue or is just one person talking?
    • What is the tone and purpose?
    • How is it organized?
    • Where is your genre found? What kind of place/publication?
    • Consider who created the piece (a scholar? a reporter? a creative writer? a child? etc.)
    • How does the piece use/utilize research, fact, statistics, etc.?
    • Quote one sentence from your sample that you think is effective, and explain why you chose it.

A research interview is typically a two-person interview conducted to gather information and increase knowledge on a given topic. As an example, in this case, a Vogue interview has been conducted with Rihanna to gain insights into her experiences as a mom. The interview is very descriptive and presented in a paragraph format. The tone and purpose of the interview are to give readers an idea of the popular celebrity’s life. It appears that a reporter from Vogue sought to conduct this interview as Rihanna is a very well-known personality. The author has included many inner dialogue parts, an example being, “Incidentally, they are yet to publicly share their son’s name. Rihanna, Rocky, their families, and teams are so consistent in calling him “baby” in my presence I do half wonder if his name might actually be Baby.)” to give readers an in-depth understanding of the subject. The writer of this interview uses inner dialogue and outer dialogue as it is a conversation; however, Rihanna is obviously mentioned more as this is her interview.

A political interview is a form of interview where you are able to debate your argument with another person to bring out a resolution to the manner or to influence the other person with your beliefs. These interviews can last from 45 minutes to 90 minutes. An example of this is someone debating their beliefs to a political figure to fight for a change within the area that they are living in a change in a place that they work in or anything else. It can be written in a multiple-page article with many paragraphs as well as being something that is descriptive. It can be written from multiple points of view, for instance, if your argument involves multiple cases with multiple people. It can be one person talking to another or multiple people talking amongst one another. The purpose of this type of interview is to show the audience your viewpoints on a matter to influence them or to bring about an issue to someone in a higher position. It can be organized anywhere but when talking to a political figure it can be located at a city hall, news station, or where the person is holding a speech. Thomas Edison was the person who invented the interview. Facts and statistics are used by the interviewer gathering resources on their topics and finding the issues that they have within it or something that needs to be addressed. An example of this is when someone argues to their boss about the bad working conditions that they face.

The infographic has sections with data and text. Each section usually only has at most 2 – 3 sentences. The overall piece seems to be just 1 page of standard legal size paper. I think many infographics differ in size, but almost all of them is no bigger than 1 page.

The infographic uses a lot of comparing and imagery so that the common person are able to put the facts into perspective.

    From 3rd person.

    Just 1 speaker.

The tone is mostly neutral and sometimes surprised when it tries to tell the reader just how big a certain statistic is. The purpose is to inform and make sure the reader really understands what the infographic is trying to say.

It is split into sections for different types of information. It is organized all on 1 page, and sometimes uses how the sections are placed and sized to get the reader to read in a certain order.

I found it in the images section after searching for infographics.

The infographic was published by the Environmental Protection Agency.

I uses facts by incorporating them into or with graphics to make it easier to understand.

“Minor water leaks account for 1 trillion gallons of wasted water each year and is equal to annual households water use in nearly 11 million homes.” It uses a graphic of the whole USA, and while it’s technically unrelated to the data, it brings the idea that a lot of the water in the country are being wasted and makes you want to do your part to conserve water, and try not to waste it.

A job interview is usually 10 to 20 minutes. there are two people talking but taking turns. One person is the main voice who askes the questions to the other person. the tone is suspicious because you asking questions to get to know someone but also nice because you want to be nice to future coworkers. Usually the interview is one on one and its started by asking what your name and reason for wanting the job. these interviews are usually in person in a public setting like the work place or in a office room.  they ask questions that have to do with their job place, making sure the interviewee is fit for that exact job.
