Considering Genre

  • Freewrite about the genres you may choose from and how they each might/might not appeal to your audience:
    • script for a TED Talk
    • script for a radio or television interview
    • Twitter thread (at least 10 Tweets for the thread)
    • an interview
    • podcast script and (optional) recording of the podcast
    • an infographic or academic poster presentation
    • a play or film script
    • a listicle
    • a poem or song
    • a children’s book

Think of a specific audience to whom you would like to share your argument and research. Explain why. What do you think your audience knows and thinks about the subject? And what might their concerns or assumptions be about this particular topic? Choose 3-5 genres you think will appeal to your audience and help you share your research effectively.

As I discuss the impact of social media, I believe a poem, song, or children’s book would not be appropriate for the audience. Rather, a Twitter thread would be the best format for my content, as it is a part of social media and relevant to the essay’s topic. As I mentioned in my essay, a large population of the world uses social media, including myself, so it is imperative to be aware of its negative effects. I think an infographic or academic poster presentation, Twitter thread or a listicle.

As I am talking about public transportation and the reasons why we should improve it, I feel that an interview, a Twitter Thread, or an infographic poster would allow me to teach what I found to my audience. The reason why I believe this is because it would allow me to receive a public perception on how others view the transportation system in New York City and it would allow me to educate them on the different ways that we could improve them. It can also give me the opportunity to see people’s viewpoints and to see if I agree or disagree but to mainly give people their voice. I feel that they would be able to voice their concerns on how the system could improve/what are the things that need to be changed.

I would like to share with my audience about how styles have changed over time and how people would enjoy reading something that they can relate to if they are into fashion or clothes in general. As an old fashion designer I have done a lot of research regarding todays style and what’s in for today compared to years ago and which people were used to dress in a different style. In my other college in which I was doing fashion design we learned how each pattern of clothing has evolved and been applied to very different pieces than before . The reader of my story will definitely learn about the old fashion and the new evolved fashion that teenagers and adults are now wearing or dressing their kids as. My writing also taught me many things I was not aware of before and as I did more research I gained knowledge about designers I haven’t known before and different styles every country had.

the genres i may choose is an interview on how on a parent. Since my topic is parenting i would interview someone who is older to show how their generation was raised differently than how kids nowadays are raised. To show what their opinions on the different generations. Another option is a Twitter thread to show how parenting is on a daily base and how it can impacts them on the long run. Lastly an infographic to represent how children are being affected and how it is different than the old days. This can help people who are becoming parents or parents who are struggling in raising their child. Many parents search up different methods to best help their children, therefore this can be helpful for them.

I have no idea how I’d turn my research into any of the genres. I also don’t have any audience in mind, so I have no idea what they’d want. Anything requiring creativity is a no go, I’m literally incapable of coming up with anything original. The only thing that’s like maybe possible for me to make is an infographic, but I can’t think of how I would do with without just copy and pasting already existing data and visuals that already exist. A script could also be possible, but I dont know how to write a script, nor do I know what qualifies as one.

When sharing my research that I did, into a different type of genre I would probably go with a infographic, a listicle, or an interview because I can show & share other people’s thoughts & opinions when it comes to gun violence & why most people in the U.S choose to carry a firearm on them at any time throughout the day. However, I would probably not use the genre of a children’s book, play or film because it might not give out the right message or the reach the right audience in the correct way.

    • I feel like a ted talk could be good for my area of research, seeing as though (from my POV), mainly people who are more professional and deep into companies and are needed for copyright issues would generally want to hear about it through a ted talk presentation. If I do end up doing a ted talk, I’ll probably make a powerpoint or something to go along with it.
    • A TV/Radio interview doesn’t make much sense for my topic
    • Twitter thread too^
    • I will not be doing an interview
    • A podcast seems like it could have the same reasoning as a Ted talk, so that could be an option, I’d need to figure out if it’ll be one person talking or multiple
    • Not sure about doing an infographic or poster, it doesn’t feel too intresting
    • I’m not creative enough for a play/film script, I also don’t think it would fit my topic well.
    • If I end up doing a listicle, it’s because I waited last minute to do the assignment. Seems like an okay option, but kind of boring
    • I don’t think a poem or song fits the audience. If it did, I still wouldn’t know how to incorporate my research into it
    • A children’s book means I have to draw but I lost my artistic creativity. Also I feel like it doesn’t fit the theme well, since it is more of a vast topic that isn’t something you’d think a kid should be worried about.

The topic that I chose to write about is healthcare disparity and inequity. The audience that my research will target are people who work in healthcare and also organizations and people who’s job it is to address problems in the healthcare system. The genres that I think will appeal to the target audience would Infograph’s,  my topic involves a lot of statistics so an Infograph will be the best way to present them. Other genres that I may use are an interview or TED talk script.

As I discussed postpartum depression affects child development and an interview or a podcast, as many women can gather, that were diagnosed with postpartum depression and witnessed changes within their child. My major audience would be mothers who were in the same situs those being interviewed, or women who should be aware of situations like this. Allowing them to learn from one another, giving advice or small points in which they had trouble as they suffered from depression and so how impacted their child development. Postpartum depression is really known within women’s society, but many don’t think dapper about how it would affect their Child’s development as they continue to grow.

My research is about how technology has impacted society. The genre that I feel would appeal to most people is a TED talk because many people worldwide use technology daily. A ted talk script would help to spread the knowledge about why technology may be harmful and how it may be beneficial in our everyday lives.

my research topic is “Does college make you successful?”. Therefore I felt interviews is the best option to choose because I can be able to hear first hand from people with different schooling and occupations and ask how they feel going to college impacted/ didn’t impact their life.

I picked a poem about mental health because poetry allows for emotional expression and a nuanced exploration of feelings, making it a powerful medium for conveying the complexities of mental health struggles.

For a TED Talk, I would engage the audience with compelling storytelling and emphasize the human aspect of mental health challenges, aiming to inspire empathy and understanding.

In a radio or television interview, I would focus on relatable anecdotes and statistics to communicate the importance of mental health awareness concisely and effectively.

A Twitter thread could include concise insights, relevant hashtags, and shareable statistics to capture the attention of a diverse and widespread audience interested in bite-sized information.

An infographic or academic poster presentation would distill key research findings into visual elements, making it accessible and engaging for a broader audience, including those with limited time for in-depth reading.

A play or film script could use dramatic narratives and relatable characters to bring mental health issues to life, fostering empathy and understanding.

Considering a younger audience, a children’s book would simplify complex concepts, using age-appropriate language and illustrations to introduce the importance of mental well-being.

Each chosen genre serves to tailor the message to different preferences and attention spans within the target audience, fostering a more comprehensive and impactful understanding of mental health.
