As the new semester approaches we’d like to highlight some new and improved resources, services, and programs offered by the City Tech Library. Feel free to include this information on your syllabus and send your students our way for research help or resource questions!
Instruction
Instruction on library research and information literacy is something that librarians teach year-round, for all interested faculty in any department (not just English). To request library instruction for your class, please fill out the Request a Library Instruction Session form. If you have questions about library instruction or information literacy, please get in touch with Anne Leonard, coordinator of information literacy and library instruction.
Digital Tutorials and Research Guides
We have new self-paced digital tutorials, updated library research guides, and a redesigned library orientation site to help your students learn about library services and academic research. Include a link to guides or tutorials on your syllabus, Blackboard, or Openlab site.
By default, new OpenLab courses and Blackboard courses also have library tools installed. Students can use the library links on the side menu of your OpenLab or Blackboard site to search for books and articles or chat with a librarian 24X7 without navigating away from your course site. Don’t see the library tools widget on your OpenLab course? You can add it with just a few clicks by selecting Widgets from the course menu.
Eresources
Academic One File has always been an excellent general database for undergraduate research. The depth of full text offerings has recently been improved and Academic One File is now more robust than ever!
Ebook Central is an expansive collection ebooks that can be searched either through the catalog or as a standalone database.
The Wall Street Journal is free to the entire City Tech Community. Activate your free subscription today!
We continue to offer access to The New York Times. Sign up for your free academic pass or renew your subscription.
OER
Want to know more about open educational resources (OER) and cost-free course materials, including library resources, and how they can amplify your curriculum? Are you unsatisfied with the subject coverage, cultural relevance, or currency of the course materials you’re assigning? The library can introduce you to resources and opportunities to develop open educational resources for your course! Look for a call for applicants to the Fall 2018 OER Fellowship in your inbox soon! If you have any questions, please get in touch with Cailean Cooney.
Scholarly Publishing Clinic
Coming this fall, we’re launching a Scholarly Publishing Clinic. Whether you’re just getting started with your literature review, selecting the journal or documenting the value of your work, we’re here to meet with you one-on-one, in a small group, or at your department meeting. Drop-in hours are every first Thursday of the month at 12 PM. Look for an announcement soon as well as our fall 2018 workshops and event offerings.
Reserve Books and Purchase Requests
As you are finalizing your course syllabi, we encourage you to consider placing materials in our collection in the City Tech Library catalog on reserve. You can also loan or donate your copy of the textbook or other required readings. Placing titles on reserve allows for greater access to these limited materials. All reserve materials are available at the circulation desk and can be used for two hours in the library.
Reach out to the subject specialist in your area to request new purchases or to learn about recent additions to our collection. Due to budgetary constraints, the library cannot honor all purchase requests. You may also contact the Collections Management Librarian, Wanett Clyde, for general purchasing inquiries.
